Redbridge Crash Out Of FA Cup

Redbridge Crash Out Of FA Cup

Adam Dennehey26 Aug 2012 - 16:24

A young Redbridge side crashed out of the FA Cup after going out against a good AFC Dunstable side at Brewers Mill. In truth the Motormen never got out of first gear and rarely threatened the hosts in the final third where it matters most.

Dunstable started the game on the front foot with Graham Clark forcing Michael Bowditch into a good save after four minutes. Redbridge whilst not breaking the Spartan side down the flanks were working hard and forced some corners early on, which were not capitalised on.

On 16 minutes Dunstable took the lead when their big target man BJ Chirstie picked up on a ball from Lee Burgoyne to burst through Redbridge’s defence before slotting the ball past Bowditch. It was just the start the home fans inside Creasy Park Drive were looking for.

Redbridge tried to get back into the match and good play from Sibu Nuwanga on the edge of the area allowed Nana Asamoah a chance inside the box which was comfortably dealt with by Sam Leggett in goal.

Dunstable were looking a threat from set-pieces and a Wayne Mills header from a corner forced Shane Lemard to hack the ball clear off the line. It was a good clearance from the defender who in a crowded area was able to hack the ball away to safety.

A great long ball from Lemard almost set up an equaliser for Redbridge on 25 minutes but sadly winger Danny Hayes couldn’t quite keep his shot down inside the area with the ball frustratingly looping narrowly over the bar.

Just before the half-hour Dunstable doubled their lead. A miss-placed ball from Lemard fell perfectly to Burgoyne who drove forward 15 yards before burying the ball past Bowditch. It was certainly a poor goal to concede.

It could have been worse for Redbridge but thankfully Clark struck the post seconds before the break with Christie wastefully hammering the rebound wide. To their credit 3-4 of Redbridge’s players had got back on the line, so may well have been in place to block the striker’s effort had it been goal-bound.

After the break Steve Portway made an immediate change with James Briggs coming on for Patrick Cambell. Barrett went straight into midfield with James Nicholson who had been playing on the wing switching to right-back.

Dunstable despite a two-goal lead were not sitting back and after Leggett was forced into a save from Ike Nzuraba only a great save by Bowditch kept out a brilliant 30-yard shot from Christie 5 minutes into the half. It needn’t have mattered though as on 56 minutes Dunstable made it 3-0.

On the break Christie who was dominant throughout the game played in Clark who took the ball inside his marker before slotting it past Bowditch. That all but sealed the game for the hosts consigning Redbridge to their first defeat of the season in the process.

Skipper Nicki Beale though wasn’t throwing the towel in and saw a shot go wide before Asamoah saw a long-range effort go wide with Barrett seeing a deflected effort saved by Leggett who did well to tip the ball round his post.

With time running out Dunstable added further gloss to their victory when Richard Harker scored twice in the last four minutes. The first came about after Beale lost the ball with the second being a tap-in after Bowditch had kept out a close-range drive.

Redbridge: Michael Bowditch, Patrick Campbell (James Briggs 46), Randy Kaza, Shane Lemard, Nicki Beal, Gary Skerritt (Nicky Barrett 76), Jermaine Nicholson, Sibu Nuwanga (Morris Adu 57), Ike Nzuraba, Nana Asamoah, Danny Hayes.
