Essex Cup Success for Motormen

Essex Cup Success for Motormen

Adam Silver22 Sep 2016 - 12:46

Redbridge beat Waltham Forest 3-1 to progress into the 3rd round of the Essex Senior Cup, goals coming from Knight, Gordon and English.

Redbridge made the short journey to Wadham Lodge where they faced Waltham Forest in the 2nd round of the Essex Senior Cup.

It was the 2nd meeting between the sides this season after Waltham Forest had already knocked the Motormen out of the FA Cup back in August.

Redbridge were hoping for a good run in the competition just as they did last season when amongst others they beat Southend United en route to the semi-finals.

The motormen were forced into an early change when captain Lee Weemes was forced off through injury and replaced by Jay Knight.

He was involved immediately when his pass released debuant Samuel Phillips who shot across goal but his effort was easily saved.

The away side were bossing the game and it was not long before the pressure finally told and they took the lead.

A superbly weighted pass from Phillips found Knight who turned his man inside out before firing past Harrison Seetah in goal.

Aron Gordon was looking impressive down the flank and he won a ball out left that he had no right of winning and his cross almost led to a 2nd goal.

The home side ended the half with their best chance when ex Motormen Brian Moses and Jeff Hammond combined well but the striker drilled his effort wide of Mernaga's right hand post.

Redbridge extended their lead early into the 2nd period when they were awarded a penalty after Gordon was brought down in the area and he picked himself up to send Seetah the wrong way from the spot.

Good work by Moses almost saw the home side grab a goal back before a good break saw Redbridge come forward with a strong run by Joe Gent which required a last ditch challenge to prevent him from scoring.

Redbridge soon scored a 3rd goal when Gordon saw his pass split the home defence finding Kieron English in space and he fired home his effort.

The clean sheet for Redbridge never came as Moses found Hammond who looped his effort over Mernaga to pull one back.

The goal gave the home side confidence and they pushed forward in search of another as they ended the match well but Redbridge held on for the win and it is they who will find themselves in the hat for the 3rd round draw.
