Season Ends in Defeat

Season Ends in Defeat

Adam Silver29 Apr 2017 - 21:33

Redbridge ended the 2016/17 campaign with a 2-1 defeat at Sawbridgeworth Town and finish the season in 14th place.

Redbridge made the short journey up the m11 for their final match of the season at Sawbridgeworth Town.

The fixture was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday but agreed to be switched allowing the home side extra time to prepare for their League Challenge Cup final match on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Motormen were hoping to put on a better showing than in their two previous encounters v Sawbridgeworth in which they concedes six on each occasion.

Early pressure from the home side with Aaron Thomas going close with a header before the same player put his side infront.

Redbridge failed to clear a corner and Thomas was on hand to just poke the ball over the line.

The home side should have been further ahead when a cross was put into the far post where Thomas failed to connect just yards from goal.

Next Redbridge keeper Jake Mernagh had to make an important save as he denied Thomas from finishing off a nice passing movement.

The Motormen finally carved out a chance of their own when Jacob Dingli ran onto a through ball but as he tried to round Matt Ponter the keeper managed to make the save.

Aron Gordon then robbed a Sawbridgeworth midfielder of possession and broke towards goal as he tired an audacious lob over the outcoming Ponter which just dropped wide.

The away side were slowly getting a foothold back into the game and Bryan Kyungu should have done better with his effort which he dragged wide.

The home side however almost scored again when a long range effort deflected just wide leaving Mernagh flat footed.

Into the second half and Dingli was through once again but Ponter was quickly off his line to stop the Redbridge striker.

It was a much better display this half from the away side who kept pressing for an equaliser and Kyungu went close with a half volley which was well held by Ponter.

Sawbridgeworth substitute Gavin Cockman was then through on goal only to be denied by a last ditch tackle by Sean Kettle.

The second goal did soon arrive when a free kick was only half cleared leaving Sam Coe with an easy finish from close range to put some daylight between the sides.

Redbridge to their credit never gave up and pulled a deserved goal back on 87 minutes, a Samuel Phillips free kick was lofted into the box and as Dingli jumped with the keeper the loose ball fell kindly to Kyungu who had the simple task of heading over the line.

The goal gave the away side belief they could get back into the game and they very nearly did as Jack Roult had a good effort turned around the post by Ponter.

The home side were rattled but managed to stay firm and hold on for the win whilst Redbridge come away with a 14th place finish which they ultimately will be disappointed with in their first season back in the ESL.
