.Home Advantage sees Sawbridgeworth Through

Adam Silver1 Feb 2017 - 23:42

A switch of venues saw Redbridge bow out the Essex Senior Challenge Cup as they were well beaten 6-2 at Sawbridgeworth Town.

A waterlogged Oakside meant this fixture was switched to Sawbridgeworth's Crofters ground and the home side certainly took full advantage even though they were officially playing as the away side .

In driving rain Sawbridgeworth took the game straight to Redbridge and could have scored in the opening minute but the chance went begging.

The pressure continued on the Redbridge defence and resulted in the opening goal after six minutes when a free kick was only partially cleared and Gavin Cockman was on hand to fire the ball through a number of bodies and into the back of the net.

On 13 minutes the lead was doubled after a Sawbridgeworth player was upended just outside the box and up stepped Reece Cosson to drill home beating Jake Mernagh at his near post.

Redbridge had conceded six against Sawbridgeworth just a few weeks prior and must of thought the worst when yet another goal was scored.

A superb teasing cross in from Cockman finding Cosson at the back post who headed home for his second of the game.

Redbridge had offered very little in attack and their first effort of note came from a long range Oliver Bell shot which drifted wide.

This was then followed by their best chance of the match as Terrell Miller released Jacob Dingli but with just the keeper to beat he could only put the ball wide.

Sawbridgeworth came back up the other end and were immediately awarded a penalty for a trip which did seem to be just outside the box.

Cockman stepped up and blasted his penalty against the crossbar and fortunately for Redbridge away to safety.

Cosson then almost found the net as he poked just wide from a Cockman cross.

It was a better start to the second period for the Motormen as efforts from Bryan Kyungu and Dingli both tested the goalkeeper.

However against the run of play Sawbridgeworth scored a 4th as Cosson was on hand to grab his hat-trick.

The advantage swung back to Sawbridgeworth who missed a good chance before they then scored a 5th through Aaron Thomas as his effort was at first flagged offside by the assistant before being overruled by the referee.

It was so almost six as some further chances were missed before Redbridge were able to pull one back as Kyungu was put through on goal and slotted home.

This was certainly the best spell of the match for Redbridge who scored again as stand in captain Jamie Alexandrou met a corner with a sweet volley.

Dingli then almost got a 3rd back before on the counter attack Cockman found himself in acres of space and all alone he collected the ball before rounding Mernagh and finding the empty net.

It rounded off a miserable evening for Redbridge whilst Sawbridgeworth progress to the 3rd round of the Essex Senior Challenge Cup where league leaders Barking await.
