Redbridge Throw Away Lead

Redbridge Throw Away Lead

Adam Silver8 Apr 2018 - 20:10

From a 3-0 half time lead Redbridge allowed Waltham Forest back into the game to draw 4-4 as they dropped vital points in the title run in.

The Motormen were looking to bounce back after a midweek defeat at Clapton whilst Waltham Forest were in confident mood after picking up a good 3-0 victory over Basildon as they look to try and move away from the relegation positions.

The home side were missing their wide men Thomas Gogo and Reside Coxi-Sebastfao during the week and it was the latter who attacked down the left wing and he had an early chance when cutting inside before unleashing an effort which grazed the top of the bar and away to safety for Waltham Forest.

Coxi-Sebastfao was once again involved when he spread the ball out to the overlapping full back in Courtney Homans who looked to cross but with the Forest defenders allowing him too much space he was able to bring the ball forward before taking a shot which was always rising.

A great chance for Redbridge as Gogo showed good control out wide before pulling the ball back to an unmarked Calvin Poku who got his angles all wrong and shot the wrong side of the post with the goal gaping.

A brief respite for Waltham Forest as they came up field and gained a corner which was dangerously flung in but well defended and cleared to safety.

Redbridge then thought they had gone in front when Poku headed home from Homans cross at the far post but the goal was disallowed as the assistant flagged for offside.

Waltham Forest then had a chance when Harry Morgan held off Phillip Browne-Bamfpoe before managing to get a shot in which Lewis Greene in the home goal was equal to.

The opening goal of the game shortly followed when a ball down the flank from Browne-Bamfpoe found Coxi-Sebastfao who broke the offside trap and was able to calmly finish past Graham Hurst to make to 1-0 .

Forest heads never dropped and they came straight back at the other end forcing a corner which was floated in to the far post finding the head of ex Motormen Billy Sendall who looped his header over Greene but fortunately for Redbridge Eljay Worrell was on hand to head clear off the goal line.

A good chance then came for Poku who ran onto a Browne-Bamfpoe pass but just as he was about to pull the trigger in came Sendall with a well time tackle to clear the danger.

Coxi-Sebastfao was causing lots of problems down the left and he won a corner before Gogo from the other side whipped in a first time cross looking for Poku in the box but Hurst was there to gather.

Christian Owusu then held up the ball before finding Josh Brimacombe-Ward but his shot lacked power and drifted out wide. At the other end Poku headed down to Eljay Worrell who was able to turn but unable to keep his effort down.

It was not long before the second goal came and it was once again that man Coxi-Sebastfao and a goal he created and finished all by himself picking up the ball before turning his man and ran at the defence who allowed him too much space and he was able to slot home past a diving Hurst.

Two became three on 42 minutes as Coxi-Sebastfao crossed to the far post finding the unmarked Poku who had time to control and smash ball into the back of the net to finish off a very comfortable first 45mins for the home side.

Into the second period and Forest came out the blocks quickly as they tried to get themselves back into the match and it soon came when a cross fell at the feet of Owusu who used his strength to turn a defender and rifle home.

It was a slow start to the half for Redbridge and things got worse moments later when Vinny Murphy upended Owusu in the box, up stepped the striker to send Greene the wrong way and reduce the deficit further.

The ascendency was now firmly with the away side however nerves were somewhat calmed when Redbridge grabbed a 4th goal. Murphy floated in a free-kick which was headed down into the path of Poku and although his shot was well saved by Hurst the ball fell into the path of Browne-Bamfpoe who could not miss from close range.

If that was to be the last of the goals then nobody had told the away side who pulled back a 3rd goal when substitute Tony DaSilva fired home in what was a mirror image of their first goal.

Redbridge substitute Lindisipho Mtyanda then strode forward beating several players before being pulled down by Forest sub Jonjo Walsh , the player picked himself to take the kick which was just over.

Walsh then thought he had grabbed the equaliser as he rose to head into the far corner but Greene pulled off a fantastic save to deny a certain goal however there was more action to follow when deep into injury time DaSilva gathered a loose ball before crossing into the path of Owusu who smashed home through a crowded area cueing wild celebrations both on and off the pitch.

Forest from out of knowhere had snatched a draw whilst at the same time Redbridge dropped points for the second time in a week and now sit 3 points behind leaders Great Wakering Rover with just five games remaining.
