Redbridge Through in FA Vase

Adam Silver4 Nov 2018 - 14:06

The Motormen are through to the 3rd Round of the FA Vase after a 1-0 home win over Peterborouugh Northern Star thanks to a Ashley Blackburn strike.

The Motormen put their dismal home league form to one side as they triumphed in the FA Vase beating Peterborough Northern Star 1-0 and find themselves in the 3rd round for the first time since the 1998/99 season.

The home side were missing several regulars through absence and suspension however started on the front foot with Samuel Phillips wearing the 10 shot side stepping a couple of challenges before shooting low which was saved by Quincy Shorunmu.

A nice passing move between Ashley Blackburn and Jack Stevenson resulted in the latter finding space to shoot however Shorunmu was equal to it. Bryan Kyungu then tried his luck with a curling effort but it was always going over the bar.

The away side were showing little attacking presence but when they did come forward most of their play came down the right flank through Matt Barber.

A nervy moment for Redbridge followed then they almost gifted Peterborough the lead when a long throw was put in which was comfortably headed back to his keeper by captain Vinny Murphy however the keeper was out his goal and had to race back to gather the ball on the line and prevent the own goal.

Redbridge came back up field and took the lead after 31 minutes when Stevenson played the ball to Blackburn who took a touch before looking up and curled a lovely effort past Shorunu and into the top corner of the net, It was a nice way for the striker to return to the team after being out injured for the last 5 weeks.

Liam Burgess tried his luck from range as he looked to curl an effort into the goal however his shot missed the target.

Into the second period and Peterborough were presented with their best chance of the match when from a corner the ball fell kindly at the feet of Josh Rosser but from close range he blasted over the bar when it seemed easier to score.

Redbridge came back pressing their opponents as Blackburn found Larry Asare who skewed his shot well wide before a fierce free kick from Murphy was spilt by the keeper with Philips lurking at the far post but unable to make contact.

Peterborough came forward and almost got through on goal but for a good block from Asare who was back helping out his defenders before a long ball over the top caught out the home defence finding Lukas Gereltauskas in space but he fired over from a good position.

The away side were certainly coming back into this match and should have scored when Marcus Carter was disposed by Barber who crossed into the middle finding Josh Rosser, the striker controlled the ball well before turning and firing a superb shot which beat Greene but smashed against the cross bar and away to safety, it certainly was a lucky escape for Redbridge and a reminder this game was certainly finished.

It was Redbridge's turn to attack and a lovely cross field pass by Murphy found Blackburn out wide , he crossed into the middle where Phillips was waiting and although he managed to get a shot in it was deflected over and out for a corner.

Once again though Peterborough came forward through Liam Rodden who was given far too much time and space to bring the ball up field , he found Barber who saw his shot well gathered by Greene.

Daniel Smith then conceded a foul in a dangerous position outside the box and although Christian Lin stepped up to shoot he disguised the effort and instead passed to Matt Cox in space but his shot lacked any real power.

Big shouts followed by the home side for a penalty when substitute Patrick Duggan headed the ball forward which a defender misjudged ball allowing the ball to reach fellow sub Tommie Turner who looked as though he was pulled to the ground but the shouts were waved away.

Kyungu then had a chance to shoot but took too long in getting his shot in and the chance had gone before an even better chance when Burgess tried his luck with a powerful drive which was saved by Shorumu and although the ball rebounded into the path of Asare his effort came crashing back off the upright.

It was a glorious chance to double their advantage and they were almost made to pay for the miss right at the death as Peterborough almost snatched an equaliser as a ball was put across and headed down but fell just the wrong side of the post.

The whistle then blew much to the relief of the home side who will now go into the hat for Monday's draw.
