GBT PENALTY SHOOT OUT MISERY

GBT PENALTY SHOOT OUT MISERY

Adam Silver13 Nov 2019 - 09:35

Redbridge were knocked out the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy losing 3-0 on penalties after the match ended 1-1.

The Motormen made the midweek journey up the M11 to face Stansted in this rearranged Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy fixture.

The home side started on the upper foot winning a series of corners it didn't take long for them to go in front when Adam Fowles saw his shot deflect off team mate Jack Mitchell wrong footing Jake Larkins in goal allowing the ball to nestle into the back of the net.

The home side continued to press with only the cross bar coming to Redbridge's aid as Ryan Ramsey saw his free kick hit the woodwork before going behind.

The away side then broke up field as James Barlow connected well but George Marsh in the Stansted goal was equal to it and able to push the ball around the post to prevent the equaliser.

Jordan Fisher then saw an effort go high over the bar after Larkins had punched clear a corner before Redbridge leveled the match.

Liam Burgess floated a free kick into the area which Tony Martin got his head to and managed to flick the ball over the out coming Marsh.

Redbridge then had their best spell of the game thus far getting into good areas but on every occasion choosing to make the extra pass rather than shoot.

At the other end the crossbar yet again denied Stansted from doubling their advantage as from a corner the ball landed at the feet of Connor Hammond who swung a foot as he turned and looked on as the ball bounced off the top of the goal.

Redbridge were struggling to clear their lines putting added pressure on themselves and yet again only the bar saved them as somehow the ball dropped wide of the goal from another corner.

Paul Clayton and Ramsey spurned further efforts for the home side before the half time eventually blew.

Into the second period and an early opportunity for the home side after Eamon Payne saw his pass back collected by Larkins giving Stansted an indirect free kick from close range however with so many bodies behind the ball the effort was charged down.

Redbridge had a chance of their own when a defensive slip allowed in Martin who tried to lob Marsh but the ball never came down in time and just missed the target.

Mitchell then saw his free kick curl around the Redbridge wall only to be pushed away by Larkins.

The match started to now get a little on the scrappy side with little chances of real note and the became a little stop start.

With penalties looming both sides tried to find a winning goal but it failed to arrive and into a shoot out we went.

Stansted scored their first three penalties where Redbridge had all theirs saved and with that the home side progressed to the 2nd round where they will face West Essex.

Redbridge now only have the Errington Challenge Cup remaining as their only hope of silverware meanwhile these two sides will lock horns once again on Saturday as they meet this coming Saturday this time in the league.
