REDBRIDGE EASE THROUGH TO 2ND ROUND

REDBRIDGE EASE THROUGH TO 2ND ROUND

Adam Silver5 Feb 2020 - 12:49

Redbridge beat Sawbridgeworth Town Reserves 5-0 to progress through to the 2nd Round of the Peter Butcher Trophy.

Redbridge finally got this Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy fixture played at the third time of asking as they faced Sawbridgeworth Town Reserves.

Those in attendance were certainly looking for goals after seeing 19 scored in the previous two home fixtures.

The away side sitting 2nd from bottom in the Essex Senior Reserve division came with a "nothing to lose" attitude as they looked to test themselves against a senior side.

Indeed it was the away side with an early opportunity but a heavy touch from Raheem Gray allowed the ball to be comfortably collected by Florent Gislette in the Redbridge goal.

The opening goal almost arrived for the home side but Charlie Portway only managed to blast over much to his disappointment as he certainly would have expected to hit the target.

Most of the play was coming from the home side who were managing to get into good positions however the final ball was lacking .

There was little in way of goal mouth action however Jordayne Henry tried his luck seeing his shot sting the palms of Luke Morton who palmed the ball away for a corner.

A series of corners followed for Redbridge which finally resulted in the opening goal, Charleston Browne saw his initial shot blocked but the rebound fell kindly to him and his shot found the corner of the net.

Spurned on by their lead Redbridge attacked from the off almost doubling their advantage as a Joe Maskell headed was cleared off the line.

Gray came forward for Sawbridgeworth Town and got himself into a good shooting position however the ball was always going wide.

The resulting goal kick led to the next goal as Timi Abiola did well down the left before cutting the ball back into the path of Charlie Portway who was on hand to tap home from close range.

Resilient defending from the away side limited the efforts on goal however Morton was forced to make a good save before showing quick reactions to deny substitute Charles Opoku.

The 3rd goal shortly arrived as Portway grabbed his second of the game lurking at the far post from inside the penalty box after Hassan Nalbant had fired the ball across the area.

A rare chance for the away side as Gray laid the ball into the path of Jordan Gibson who saw his shot saved.

Darnell Bromfield then came forward passing to Nalbant who looked up before unleashing a fierce drive which flew past Morton to make it four.

Nalbant almost scored again as he got on the end of a Liam Burgess free kick only to see his header drop across the goal just wide of the far post.

He was not to be denied with his next chance as again fired a low drive into the corner of the net leaving Norton no chance.

The final minutes of the match saw the away side desperately looking for a consolation goal as Gaston Mendy along with both Gray and Griffiths were all denied by good stops from Gislette who was able to keep his clean sheet and see his side progress into the 2nd Round of the competition where they will now host Sawbridgeworth Town 1st team.
