Motormen into Semi Finals

Adam Silver26 Jan 2022 - 13:00

Redbridge overcame a young Walthamstow side 2-0 and will now host either Athletic Newham or Stansted in the semi finals of the Peter Butcher Trophy.

The Motormen made the short journey round the North Circular to face Walthamstow for the second time in a fortnight although this time was for a place in the semi finals of the Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy.

Walthamstow fielded a youthful side with their main goal still on securing the Essex Senior League title in which they sit 10 points clear at the top of the table.

The first chance of the game fell to the away side when a loose pass from a Walthamstow player fell to the feet of Tyrone Scarlett, although he had time and space he chose a speculative effort which rose well clear of the bar .

The hosts then came forward winning a free kick in a dangerous position which was taken by Samir Bihmoutine but the ball flew the wrong side of the upright.

Redbridge were having most of the possession with much of their build up coming via the left through full back Jack Roult although up till now had done little to test Jack Moore in goal.

They came close to open the scoring when Loui Hazlewood reacted quickly to some hesitant keeping but agonizingly saw his effort rebound back off a post, the rebound by Tony Martin was cleared by a defender on the line.

The chances started to build up now for the away side firstly with Martin who found himself through on goal deciding to take an early shot which only succeeded in finding the side netting before Hazlewood flashed a low effort just wide.

The second period began as Redbridge almost scored an early goal when a Hazlewood cross found Martin who got a good connection however Moore was able to push the ball onto the crossbar and away to safety.

Soon after the opening goal did come and it was no surprise to see Redbridge score it, Martin saw his headed palmed up into the air and Nathan Okoye was on hand to jump highest and nod the rebound into the net.

The goal saw no let up in Redbridge attacking and Martin was through once again , he turned inside a defender but was unable to keep his shot on target

Walthamstow then won themselves a free kick which dropped into the box and fired goalward requiring a goal line clearance however the referee had already blown for a foul on the Redbridge keeper.

Moments later and Redbridge doubled their advantage in spectacular style, Hazlewood held the ball up before finding Martin who looked up and fired an unstoppable effort into the back of the net from long range leaving Moore no chance.

The home side almost pulled a goal back when from a corner the ball was flicked on and almost put through his own goal by Hazlewood however Martin was able to make the save.

There was little goal action in the final moments and Redbridge were able to see the match through and secure their passage into the semi finals where they will host the winners of Athletic Newham and Stansted.
