SEMI FINALS BECKON FOR MOTORMEN

Adam Silver24 Mar 2023 - 08:34

Redbridge beat Stansted 2-1 to reach the semi-finals of the Errington Challenge Cup, our goals from Samaj Gill and Joni Vukaj

Redbridge were back in action just two days on from their Peter Butcher Trophy semi-final victory over Barking as they hosted Stansted in the Quarter Finals of the Errington Challenge Cup.

As expected George Christou rang the changes , duel registered from Hashtag United Joni Vukaj and Eli Benoit both started whilst there was a return for ex Redbridge midfielder Remi Nelson who was recently signed from Barking.

Within the first 30 seconds a loose ball saw Stansted straight on the attack as they came forward and won a corner, with Redbridge failing to clear Michael Mignot went close but his shot was struck wide of the upright.

Joseph Clark then tried his luck from distance which George Martin in the Redbridge goal held at the second time of asking , the opening stages began to the away side whilst it was a slow start for the Motormen.

Redbridge however in their first venture up field won themselves a penalty, Tayo Josh Olukolo came forward down the left flank before cutting inside into the box and just as he crossed the ball he was brought crashing down to the ground leaving the referee with a decision to make and he duly awarded the spot kick.

Abs Thompson stepped up over the ball but he blasted high over the bar from 12 yards out , opportunity missed for the home side.

The penalty however appeared to wake up the home side who were now looking far more lively in their play, Joni Vukaj seeing his shot sting the fingertips of Stansted keeper James Askew who palmed the ball away for a corner.

The corner was quickly played into the path of Joey May who weaved past 2 players before he was sent crashing to the floor but this time the referee waved away the appeals and waved for play to continue.

The chances continued to build for Redbridge , Samraj Gill then made space before looking to curl the ball into the top corner but his effort was too high and sailed over the bar.

A good chance then followed for Stansted to level, a ball was played forward finding Carl Conway all alone unmarked but he could only find the wrong side of the upright when he really should have done better.

The home side were then forced into an early change when Thompson went off injured and was replaced by Michael Pindy.

The change reaped reward when with half time approaching Redbridge took the lead, a throw on was only headed into the path of Gill who stroked home.

The second period began with Redbridge straight on the attack, Reuben Campbell drove forward winning his side a corner. It was swung into the crowded penalty box, Askew failed to get a good clearance with his punch and the ball was played back in which somehow Stansted managed to clear with several Redbridge players unable to stab the ball over the line.

Nelson then saw a shot well saved by the feet of Askew before Tendai Quamina went close , he raced onto a through pass getting to the ball first before the Stansted keeper however was forced wide and unable to keep his shot on target.

The pressure continued from the home side as May was then denied by a block from a defender before his free kick was pushed away by Askew for a corner.

Whilst the scores remained at 1-0 Stansted still felt they were in the game and Jack Mitchell almost found himself through on goal however Olukolo showed good pace and was able to get back to make the challenge.

Redbridge then came forward themselves and doubled their advantage, Vukaj passed to Peterkin before collecting the return ball before showing good composure to finish smartly past Askew in goal.

Stansted to their credit didn’t give up the ghost and just three minutes later pulled a goal back , a cross in from the right found George O’Connor and although it at first looked like Martin had made a good stop the ball dropped into the back of the net to make it game on again.

Substitute Miles Peterkin then saw his powerful shot saved before the home side were reduced to ten men, Nelson being given his marching orders for a second yellow card.

Six minutes of added time was then shown as Stansted pushed everyone forward looking for the equalizer which would take the game into a penalty shoot out , they came very close when Jack Mitchell curled an effort which looked to be heading for the top corner but went agonizingly wide

With that full time was blown and it will be the Motormen who progress into a semi-final away at Woodford Town.
