Last Minute Goal Secures Victory

Last Minute Goal Secures Victory

Adam Dennehey15 Oct 2014 - 09:57

A last minute winning goal from Leon Smith gave Redbridge a 2-1 victory over Aveley to continue our winning run to 4 matches

Redbridge dug deep and won their fourth straight game to move up to 17th position and claim a second win against Aveley within 8 days.

The home side went into the game on the back of three successive wins scoring ten goals and full of confidence. The men in blue took the lead on just two minutes, Patrick Damali's through ball was expertly finished by Chinedu Mckenzie who continued his fine form netting his fourth goal in just three outings.

Aveley hit back and had two decent chances to level in quick succession but Jack Avery in goal was equal to ensure his side still led.

The chances kept on coming and Junior Ogezi-Uzokwe had a golden opportunity when he rounded the keeper and was about to bring his side level but Tyron Thomas had different ideas making a superb last ditch tackle to deny him.

Next to try his luck was Marcus Elliot who fired in a left footed shot but once again Avery was there to prevent him down low to his right. Against the run of play the hosts nearly doubled their lead when Charlie Parish's snap shot from inside the box was tipped round the post by James Marrable and from the resulting corner Wallace's flicked header was scrambled off the line and away to safety by Aveley.

Parish showed that as well as being dangerous attacking he is also a fine defender when he made a fantastic interception to keep the score at 1-0. The visitors kept trying but couldn't get past a determined Avery, he initially did well to get a hand to the cross with the loose ball falling out to Elbi who crashed in a shot but once again he was equal to it to make another fine save.

Possibly the save of the half came just before the break and Ogezi-Uzokwewill be wondering how he didn't bring his side level. He somehow missed when Avery dropped a cross but recovered excellently to make himself big and block the strikers shot.

Amazingly Aveley had an incredible 14 attempts on goal during the first half but couldn't make any count as they trailed at the break. Aveley finally make their dominance count and equalised when Ogezi-Uzokwe reacted first to prod home to level the scores.

Avery was surely the stand out player on the pitch made another super save from a Stavrinou corner that was heading all the way in. The Redbridge goalkeeper was having surely one of the games of his life in which he made over ten stops.

Vinny Murphy came close to snatching an unlikely victory for the Motormen late on but his curling free kick was pushed away to safety by Marrable. Just as the points looked like they were going to be shared Redbridge snatched an unlikely victory. Great play by McKenzie who cut the ball back for Leon Smith who swept home into the far corner to spark wild scenes amongst the Oakside crowd.

The hosts owe a lot to Avery whose fantastic performance kept them in the game, he made a string of fine saves to guide his side to three priceless points.
