Redbridge make it TEN on the SPIN

Adam Silver12 Mar 2023 - 11:00

Redbridge beat Sawbridgeworth Town 3-0 to record a 10th consecutive win.

Redbridge hosted Sawbridgeworth town at the Oakside as they went in search of a 10th consecutive victory looking to make it 16 matches without defeat.

An early opportunity for the home side as Tony Martin helped the ball through towards his strike partner George Purcell but the Sawbridgeworth defender did well to shield his body in front of him and in turn denying any shot on goal.

The two players teamed up soon after but this time the end result was the opening goal, a poor clearance out of defence fell to Martin who broke forward down the left and he pulled the ball back towards Purcell who met it first time striking past George Edgeworth in goal.

Edgeworth had to be alert soon after as he palmed away and effort from Martin who hit the ball on the volley after being set up by Jamie Price.

The visitors came forward for the first time forcing a series of corners, one of those almost fell kindly to David Etcheri in the box but good defending denied him a clear chance. Skipper Marcus Dowdeswell then saw a header at the far post find the side netting before he was soon forced off with injury.

Redbridge were winning the majority of the midfield battles with Jack Chawner at the heart of most of his sides play.

Sawbridgeworth were conceding several fouls one of which was just outside the area, Martin stepped up to take the resulting free kick however it was comfortably saved by Edgeworth.

A rare opportunity at the other end as Nathan Okoye struggled with a bouncing ball which fell kindly to Bruno Gomes who was able to fire in a shot however Connor Wheatley in the Redbridge goal was untroubled.

Into the second half and the two Redbridge strikers combined well yet again , this time however Purcell could only drag a shot wide of the upright.

Abs Thompson then came forward showing lovely skill to turn away from two players, he sprayed the ball cross field to Cobblah but the move eventually broke down.

Another free kick was awarded to the home side after Joe Elliott was brought down after he had brought the ball up field the ball was played short to Purcell who turned and shot forcing Edgeworth into a smart save with his feet.

The Motormen then doubled their advantage, a cross came in from the right finding Martin who saw his headed effort beat Edgeworth but bounce against the crossbar however it rebounded kindly into the path of Price who headed back into an empty net.

Both sides made several substitutions as the clock ticked down and with just five minutes remaining Purcell was brought down in the box winning his side a penalty. He dusted himself off to take the kick which left Edgeworth with no chance as he got his second off the game

Late on Gomes was almost in for what would have been no more than a consolation however Wheatley was quickly out of his goal to clear and with that full time was called as Redbridge maintain their promotion push.
