Late Goal Keeps Promotion Hopes Alive

Late Goal Keeps Promotion Hopes Alive

Adam Silver16 Mar 2023 - 11:31

Redbridge needed a late goal from George Purcell to draw 1-1 at Clapton.

Redbridge made the short journey to East London to face relegation threatened side Clapton on a cold wet evening, the last thing anyone would have wanted was a delayed kick off, but bad traffic had prevented all the officials from arriving on time however the match got underway just around 10 minutes late in the end.

Not much to report in the opening stages with the closest chance coming when a Samraj Gill corner almost caught out the Clapton goalkeeper however, he was able to tip the ball behind.

Redbridge were starting to take control of the game applying plenty of pressure as they forced a series of corners however failed to make any of them count. Chances came and went for Jamie Price who was denied on the line before a George Purcell free kick centre of goal brushed against the cross bar.

Bradley Bennett then drove forward evading a couple of challenges before he found himself with a chance to shoot however the ball was deflected wide for a corner kick.

In addition to the increasing corner count Clapton were also conceding a large number of free kicks , one of which saw Nathan Okoye head over before Jack Chawner fired an effort over.

It took well into added injury time for Clapton to register their first shot however number 18 attempt was well off target, James Barlow then went agonisingly close for Redbridge however both sides went into the break level.

The second half started and almost saw the home side in on goal after sloppy play from Redbridge however the chance came to nothing.

From that moment onwards it was a repeat performance of the first half , Redbridge domination winning corner after corner and free kicks however they still were unable to find that elusive goal.

Okoye thought he had scored when he met a corner with his head however a defender was well placed on the line to clear, moments later Barlow raced through and lobbed the keeper but as he was back peddling, he superbly managed to claw the ball away and turn behind for yet another corner.

Redbridge made their first changes of the night as Ibrahim Kehinde and Joey May entered the field however Kehinde took a knock and was himself substituted. Further efforts continued for the away side as Joe Elliott followed by Price both saw shots wide.

A real kick in the teeth followed when against the run of play a long ball was played up field by Clapton, Okoye came across with their player and both fell to the ground prompting big shouts from the home bench for a penalty kick.

The referee at first did not award anything however his assistance flagged him across and after a brief discussion the decision was changed, and a penalty was duly awarded. Up stepped their striker to send Wheatly the wrong way and give his side the lead whilst Redbridge were in unfamiliar territory having to come back from behind having conceded their first league goal since November 19th.

The clock was ticking down and just when it appeared that Redbridge would be beaten up popped Purcell in the box who was able to turn and fire home from close range to grab the all-important equaliser.

Into added time and Clapton had a rare opportunity to score however good defending denied them the chance while at the other end Redbridge were throwing everything at their opponents including the kitchen sink but good defending prevented a Redbridge winning goal.

The referee was not allowing any time wasting to take place which was shown by him adding an extra 15 minutes of play however the result ended 1-1 , with Enfield dropping points it could be seen as a missed opportunity for the Motormen but at the same time 1 point is better than none and keeps any promotion hopes very much alive
