Motormen Unable to Hold Out

Adam Silver10 Feb 2016 - 10:29

Redbridge came back from two down before eventually losing 4-3 to Thamesmead Town, our goals from Portway(2) and Knight.

The Motormen hosted ex Redbridge manager Terry Spillane's Thamesmead Town to the Oakside which went ahead after passing an earlier pitch inspection.

Straight from the kick off Thamemead went forward and forced an early corner which was swung in and headed home by Jack Barry, the time stood at just 52 seconds and was certainly not the ideal start for the home side.

On eight minutes It was almost 2-0 when Theo Johnson-Fairweather created space for himself before smashing his shot against the crossbar and thankfully for the home side back out to safety.

They however did not have to wait long to grab the 2nd and it came when a loose ball from Harry Prince fell to Theo Fairweather Johnson who ran at the Redbridge defence and slotted home past the despairing dive of Callum Chafer.

Redbridge were on the ropes and only a goal line headed clearance denied a sure 3rd .

Good work by Harry Prince forced a corner which eventually led to a Redbridge goal after a long ball found Charlie Portway in an onside position and he took his time before calmly stroking home past Charlie Himbury to score what was his 5th goal in his last four matches.

Prince was then disposed just outside his own penalty box and the ball fell to Paul VInes who although saw his effort beat Chafer the ball bounced back off a post and into the keeper's grateful arms.

A defensive mix up by Thamesmead saw Prince take advantage as he whipped in a dangerous cross but unfortunately evaded everyone.

It did not seem possible after the first 10 minutes but Redbridge went and leveled the scores and once again it was that man Portway who timed his run well to latch onto a through ball and slotted home.

The home side were now in confident mood and a good move saw the play switched wide to Prince who cut inside a defender but was unable to keep his effort down.

Into the 2nd half and Vines squandered a good chance to put Thamesmead back in front but he blasted over from 10 yards out.

Redbridge then went up the other end and had a good chance of their own when substitute Jay Knight put over a good cross which landed at the feet of Coxi-Sebastfao who scuffed his attempt wide.

Thamesmead did retain their lead when a cross was headed in by Fairweather Johnson for his 2nd of the match. The goal changed the swing of the match back into the away side's favour and from a corner they had a couple of opportunities to further increase the score.

They did just that after free kick was conceded by Emmanuel Sackey and it was floated in finding the unmarked Barry who popped up to head home for his 2nd of the game.

Redbridge were not beaten yet however and broke away down the right wing where Knight picked up the ball before taking it past Himbury and tapping home into an empty net. The home side were now piling forward in desperate need of the equaliser which Knight almost got when he latched onto a ball over the top and held off his marker but saw his shot saved by the feet of the goalkeeper.

A couple of late chances then came for either side , first as Portway rose highest to got his header on target and it needed Himbury to tip over the bar before Fairweather Johnson was denied his hat trick forcing Chafer into a good save.

Thamesmead were able to see the match out and put further pressure on the home side who now sit 5 points adrift from safety in the relegation places.
