Late Goal Denies Motormen Victory

A 90th minute goal denied Redbridge all 3 points against 10 man Cheshunt, our goal came through Jay Knight

Relegated Redbridge hosted Cheshunt in this rearranged fixture hoping to follow on from Saturday's win over Barkingside.

Cheshunt meanwhile still had hopes of catching 5th placed AFC Hornchurch as they hoped to reach the play offs.

The game started slowly and it took up until the 22nd minute for the first attempt which came through Cheshunt substitute Luke Marshall but he shot wide of the target.

Minutes later and an even better opportunity came their way when a through ball released Tom Bruno but his shot was well saved by the feet of Niklas Freund in the Redbridge goal.

The home side then had their best chance when Reside Coxi-Saebastfao found space onside and beaded down on goal but he hit his effort straight at James May who was able to make the save.

The flash point of the half came on 40 mins when the away side were reduced to ten men after Liam Hope was involved in an altercation with a Redbridge player and the referee showed no hesitation in showing him a red card.

The 2nd half began with a fierce free kick from Bruno which took a deflection and required a good diving save from Freund to turn away for a corner.

Against the ten men Redbridge were starting to see spent the of the ball although we're unable to really trouble the Cheshunt back line.

However they finally made a breakthrough after 73 minutes when a strong powerful run upfield from Coxi-Saebastfao ended with a lovely through ball to Jay Knight who took his time before looking up and slotting home.

The home side soon after had a great chance to double their advantage as Rigers Kabashi nicked the ball away from his marker and with just the keeper to beat he was unable to hit the target and allowed May to make the save denying what would have been the young midfielders first goal of the season.

As four minutes of injury time were announced the away side grabbed an equaliser as top scorer Jason Hallett was on hand to poke home.

Redbridge then went straight up the other end and seemed destined to regain the lead when a square ball landed at the feet of Joe Gent and with time and space he somehow managed to blast his shot wide of goal when it seemed easier to score.

The referee blew his whistle meaning Redbridge must avoid defeat from their two remaining league matches to have any chance of overhauling Barkingside on their outside hope of a reprieve whilst Cheshunt would need to win both their remaining fixtures and at the same time hope AFC Hornchurch lose both their games to have any chance of sneaking into the play offs.
