It was just one of those nights for the Motormen who gave everything in the game. In the end they had to settle for a draw which sees them pick up their first point of the season after four frustratingly games played.
Redbridge started the game well and could have gone ahead inside four minutes. A corner into the box from the right was headed goalwards by Alex Read. Somehow Cheshunt’s young keeper Joe Wright got down to keep the ball out with Redbridge centre back Sean Crossley dragging the rebound wide of the post.
Kevin McLeod was making an impression on his home debut for the side. The experienced football league attacking midfielder was stringing the passes in midfield. A fine delivery from a freekick from McLeod picked out Tom Stephen in the box. Stephen’s shot was blocked with Anton Agdomar driving a powerful shot narrowly wide of the post.
On their first attack of the game, Cheshunt almost took the lead. Talented forward Chris Meikle was picked out well 30 yards from goal by his team mate Matt Thomson. Running towards goal and with space opening out for him Meikle shot brilliantly towards goal. Just as the ball was looking destined to nestle in the bottom corner Dave McCartney magnificently tipped the ball past the post. It was a save that would not have looked out of place in the Premiership. McCartney was in the thick of the action moments later when he blocked a Darrel Cox cross into the box which would have picked out Meikle free inside the six yard box.
At right back for Redbridge, Donovan Wilson was making his first appearance of the season. As ever Wilson was giving his all and was linking up brilliantly with Julian Ashby down the right flank for Redbridge. The experienced South African only just back from a holiday to his native country was working tirelessly and ensured Cheshunt’s Billy Haspinall could cause the hosts any damage.
Seconds before half time, Redbridge should have had a penalty which would have left Cheshunt down to 10 men. Some intelligent play by McLeod and Steve Good presented Read with a clean run through on goal. Just as the young striker was seemingly going to bury the ball past Wright, Cheshunt’s Darren Williams cynically hauled him down. Incredibly Referee Evans or his linesman who had a good view of the play did not award a penalty. It was a ridiculous decision that left the Redbridge supporters fuming as not only would it have been a chance for the Motormen to grab the lead, it was a clear red-card offence.
After half time, Redbridge worked hard but just could not find the breakthrough. Inside the last 25 minutes experienced forwards Julian Edwards and Wayne Grant were brought on and both had chances to score. Grant was guilty of missing a chance at the near post following good play from McLeod at the byline, but he almost made up for that in spectacular style with a turn and shot from outside the penalty area that Wright somehow tipped over the bar. From the resulting corner, in the congested penalty area Edwards saw a shot blocked.
Cheshunt’s only chance on goal in the second half saw Darrell Cox see a header go wide of the goal following a good ball into the box. With time running out Redbridge pushed forward for a vital win. Referee Evans and his linesman continued to annoy Dave Ross and Kris Taylor with some dreadful offside decisions costing Grant, Edwards and McLeod clean runs through on goal.
In the dying stages of the game, Good had a goal bound shot blocked by Williams who was lucky to be on the pitch from the incident in the first half and then a Grant block from a Cheshunt clearance somehow looped goalwards only to be tipped over the bar by Wright. When the luck’s against you it’s against you.
As disappointed as the Redbridge players and management were with the result, they have a great chance to bounce back on Saturday when they face London Colney at the Oakside in the First qualifying round of the FA Cup in a game that’s worth £3000 in prize money.
