First League Win Arrives in Style

Adam Dennehey23 Oct 2010 - 19:53

Redbridge finally recorded their first league victory of the season with a superb 4-0 win over Brentwood Town.

Goals from Ellis Skidmore(2), Kevin Mcleod and Hyun-Jin Lee sealed a fine win for Kris Taylor's side as with that result the team moved of the bottom of the table.

It was a surprising win for the Motormen as they weathered an early storm from the visitors and put on arguably their best performance of what up until now has been a disappointing season.

In goal for Redbridge was the experienced James Redwood. Redbridge needed the keeper early on when under intense pressure from Brentwood; the writing looked on the wall for the hosts. After Nick Muir missed a chance, Town’s Ellis Remy had a great chance to score.

Receiving a good ball from Petrit Elbi, the powerful forward looked odds-on to score inside the box. Despite striking the ball powerfully goalwards, Redwood was on hand to brilliantly save the ball with his legs to stop Remy putting Brentwood in front.

That proved to be a pivotal moment of the match as Redbridge attacked shortly after and went ahead. First a good team move saw a corner won after Kevin McLeod saw a shot deflected onto the bar.

The corner by Matthew Gillingham was brilliantly whipped into the box and after Glen Golby's header McLeod flicked the ball goalwards. Ellis Skidmore recently signed from Canvey Island was on hand to scramble the ball home and in process of scoring his first goal for the club, vitally put the Motormen ahead after 37minutes.

It was Déjà vu for Redbridge six minutes later as the lead was doubled in the same circumstances. Good play down the wing by Sonny Adams helped win a corner, which Gillingham again delightfully whipped in. Golby again got his head to the ball and despite not controlling the ball perfectly again Skidmore was on hand to scramble the ball home. It was a shock for Redbridge, but a deserved one as they went into half time 2-0 up.

After half time Brentwood tried hard to get back into the game. Ross Parmenter was working hard in midfield but was unlucky to see Golby and Nathan Fletcher recently signed from Brentwood block any cross coming into the box.

With the confidence flowing, Redbridge wrapped the game up 11 minutes into the half. Good play again from Gillingham and Skidmore ended with Hyun-Jin Lee perfectly playing McLeod through on goal. Powerfully the Scouser held off Brentwood’s centre halves before class fully slotting the ball past Andy Hall in goal to make it 3-0 and game over.

Brentwood almost got a consolation 20 minutes from time but Danny Green’s turn and shot clipped the woodwork and Tom Stephen was on hand to clear to safety. Not long after Redbridge made it 4-0 when Lee coolly finished inside the box after the Korean ran onto a brilliant McLeod through ball. It was Lee’s second goal of the week following his strike versus Grays Athletic in midweek

It was a fine win for the Motormen, which should give everyone confidence and momentum heading into the next couple of games. For Brentwood, Les Whitton’s side will need to bounce back as there is no doubt following their recent run in the FA Cup that they are not a bad team overnight.
