Great Redbridge Win On Return

Great Redbridge Win On Return

Adam Dennehey11 Dec 2010 - 21:10

Two goals from Tom Stephen earned Redbridge a vital third league win of the season as they overcame a tough Great Wakering side 2-1 at the Oakside.

It was an even better result for the Motormen as defeats for Ilford, Leyton, Tilbury and Waltham Forest down at the bottom of the table sealed a good weekend for the team much to the delight of manager Kris Taylor

Redbridge started brightly and Charlie Hurlock in midfield was looking to cause Rovers trouble and almost did when his low shot from outside the box forced a good save from Louis Godwin-Green in goal. Good work out wide by Charlie Read found Matthew Gillingham down the byline who crossed into the box where Elie Kayembe on debut for the Motormen got his head onto the ball only to see the ball go narrowly wide of the goal.

Pressure finally told a minute before the half hour when Redbridge went ahead. Hard work in midfield saw Gillingham cross the ball for Kayembe in the box. Under pressure from a defender, Kayemebe’s shot on goal was blocked but the forward quickly got to the rebound and despite stretching down to get the ball smartly slotted the ball back across goal where Tom Stephen was on hand to bury it home. It was the youngster’s second goal for the club and his first at home.

After that Great Wakering came back into the game as their dangerous front-line of Tony Martin, Dan Trenkel and John Bradley began to click into gear. Saying that though Redbridge’s backline, particularly centre backs Glen Golby and Nathan Fletcher didn’t give an inch to them blocking shots and winning headers when needed to to see Redbridge through to half time with a lead. Only once was Elliot Justham in goal for Redbridge troubled when he made a godo save from Bradley inside the box.

Rovers came out strongly after half time and after Redbridge went close to doubling their lead after a Gillingham cross caused trouble, equalised after a lovely counter attacking move. Good play in midfield from Trenkel and Billy Johnson found Jimmy Webb out wide. Webb got past his marker before putting in a peach of a ball into the box which Martin on loan from Braintree clinically stroked home.

It was a bad start to the half for Redbridge but they weathered a short storm to retake the lead nine minutes later. A freekick won out wide brilliantly found Kayembe who deftly headed the ball past his marker straight into the path of Stephen who was all alone in the box, who again slotted home to score his second of the game.

Stephen’s goal turned out to be the winner, but only after a piece of remarkable goalkeeping from Elliot Justham in goal. Justham in ahead of James Redwood had everyone applauding him after somehow tipping a thunderous strike from 25 yards out by Webb over the bar. Redbridge held on in the remaining 20 minutes and will hope to follow this result with more points over the festive period.
