Undone at Brentwood

Undone at Brentwood

Adam Dennehey6 Feb 2011 - 00:09

A 1st minute penalty and 90th minute goal was enough to give the home side the 3 points.

A goal within the first minute and in stoppage time was enough to see Brentwood edge past local rivals Redbridge.

It only took 17 seconds for the first major incident as Sos Yao burst through on the left hand side and was taken down giving the referee no choice but to award a very early penalty. Doyle stepped up and slotted the ball under goalkeeper.

Redbridge tried their best to get back into the game as both teams spurned chances but the points were sealed when substitute Steve Butterworth caught the away side on the break and slotted home the winner.

The pressure was on Redbridge for much of the first half as Brentwood controlled the game but without creating much chances. Nicky Muir had a very spectacular effort saved halfway through the half before Jocob Dingli had a shot saved and then cleared off the line.

There was almost an equaliser for the away side with just over five minutes left of the half. A corner was swung over to the back post and headed toward goal from Erdem Artun but his effort hit the post on its way out.

The last action of the half came from another Redbridge header. This time Kevin McLeod rising highest but his header flew wide.

Redbridge survived the first seventeen seconds of the second half without giving Brentwood another chance to score and two minutes after the restart they came very close to leveling things. A through ball bounced in front of McLeod who decided to go for the lob but his effort dragged just wide much to the relief of the Brentwood keeper.

As the clock ticked over the hour mark Brentwood could have doubled their lead. Substitute Butterworth eventually got a long ball down before turning and hitting a shot which was parried by the Redbridge keeper. Dingli rushed in for the rebound but could not make a connection as the ball was cleared for a corner.

Both sides tired and tried to either finish the game off or find the equaliser but it would be Brentwood who would take the points with Butterworth taking advantage of a quick breakaway and cooly slotting the ball in between the keepers legs.

It was a good result for Brentwood who look to move up the table under new boss Steve Witherspoon. They host Enfield Town on Tuesday with Redbridge hoping to pick up some much needed points when they host a local derby against Romford.

Redbridge: Elliott Justham, Kevin Coyle, Tom Stephen, Jonathan Glowacki, Nathan Fletcher, Glen Golby, Erdem Artun (Julian Ashby 86), Hyun-Jin Lee, Elie Kayembe (Julian Edwards 15), Kevin McLeod, Shane Stamp.
