Motormen Stall at Waltham Forest

Adam Dennehey31 Mar 2011 - 15:26

Redbridge slumped to a disappointing defeat to bottom-placed side Waltham Forest at Cricklefields as a poor first half performance came back to haunt Jody Brown’s team on the night.

The Motormen never got going in the first half and Forest’s energy saw them win a penalty after 15 minutes.

A ball into the box split the Redbridge defence where Ian Luck managed to drag the ball past Lee Townrow who unfortunately fouled the striker as he nudged his way past. It was a clear penalty. Former Redbridge striker Luck struck the penalty home to put Forest ahead.

Despite some decent spells of possession on the ball, Redbridge looked unable of creating clear-cut chances as Forest’s defence held firm. One half chance for the Motormen came when Liam Bailey working hard in midfield found Manlee Brown 20 yards from goal. Brown laid the ball of for Craig Arnott to shoot, but from a wide angle the youngster could only shoot high and wide.

Matters got worse for Redbridge, when Forest doubled their lead six minutes from the break. Good play in midfield for the hosts saw the ball find Joel Palmer in the box. Palmer skilfully held of Sean Crossley before dinking the ball under Justham and seeing his shot trickle over the line.

It was a bad goal to concede, however Redbridge could have grabbed a goal themselves moments before half time. Good play from Shane Stamp down his wing on a break found Kevin McLeod in the box, but Redbridge’s skipper on the night could only drag his shot into the side-netting.

After half-time Redbridge began to improve though no real chances on goal were being created. Things began to improve though when Forest’s Gbenga Ladega already on a booking from the first half, hauled down Shane Stamp out wide to pick up his second booking of the night.

Being a man up, Redbridge began to take control of the game and with the pacey Kyle Fraser-Allen on the pitch began to trouble Forest’s defence.

With 10 minutes left, Redbridge grabbed a goal back through Sean Crossley. The defender doing well to head home a Julian Ashby cross into the box, after McLeod's smart lay-off from a freekick found Redbridge's number 2 in space.

Despite that goal putting Forest on the backfoot, Redbridge couldn’t quite muster an effort on goal as McLeod, Townrow and sub Elie Kayembe all saw goal-bound efforts blocked as Forest gained their first win since January.

Redbridge: Elliott Justham, Julian Ashby, Tom Stephen, Liam Bailey, Sean Crossley, Lee Townrow, Shane Stamp, Hyun-Jin Lee, Manlee Brown, Kevin McLeod, Craig Arnott.
