East Thurrock Win Title at Oakside

Adam Dennehey23 Apr 2011 - 17:53

It was a party atmosphere as East Thurrock claimed the three points they needed to wrap up the league championship. after a 3-0 win at the Oakside.

For Jody Brown's Redbridge it was another spirited performance that saw them hold more than their own for the majority of the game.

Redbridge suffered a blow moments into the game when Johnathan Glowacki limped of after a strong challenge in midfield, which forced Jody Brown to bring on Julian Ashby in place for the German midfielder.

In a game that was always going to be hard for Redbridge, that made things even tougher as the team had to reshuffle early into the game.

East Thurrock's fans got the goal they wanted to see after 20 minutes when Steve Sheenhan headed home inside the box after a throw-in caused Redbridge problems.

It was a good header by Sheenhan, but it did look as if he had fouled Tom Stephen as he headed the ball in. Despite Redbridge complaining about this, the goal was allowed to stand.

Minutes later, Redbridge were forced into a second substitution when Lee Townrow limped off after being fouled on the byline. Alexander O'Leary recently back from a loan spell at Southend Manor being brought on. It was hardly an ideal opening 25 minutes to the game, with Redbridge being a goal down having used two substitutions in the process.

Shane Stamp was working hard for Redbridge and a bright run from him down the wing almost got Redbridge back in the game. Beating three men Stamp sent in a brilliant ball into the box which was seemingly heading for Manlee Brown to lash home, but somehow Thurrock's Ben Wood was able to clear the ball away to safety.

After half time, the game seemed to be congested in the midfield. With the game in their hands, Thurrock played the game carefully holding onto the ball well. To be fair Redbridge's centrebacks Glen Golby and Sean Crossley were playing well not letting ex-Redbridge striker Hakeem Araba and his strike partner Sam Higgins the slightest chance on goal.

With the game getting stretched a pivotal five-minute spell killed off the game for the hosts and sealed the visitors promotion to the Ryman League.

First Redbridge failed to take advantage when Stamp broke clear down his wing and put in a ball into the box. Despite the ball being palmed clear by Richard Wray in goal for Thurrock, Manlee Brown was just not in the right place to strike the ball home and the ball was cleared.

Not long after a loose pass by Kyle Fraser-Allen was intercepted and when the ball found it's way to Reiss Gildey, the midfielder clinically fired past Elliott Justham to wrap up the game.

A third for Thurrock came moments later when Redbridge failed to clear a ball into the box allowing Max Cornhill the chance to tuck in a third, much to the delight of the travelling fans.

With just one more game to play for Redbridge this season, Jody Brown will now have to hope that the team can end the season in style at home to Waltham Abbey next week.

If the team show the spirit that they did in this game with abit more quality where it matters most, a win can certainly be achieved.
