Match Report: Redbridge 1–2 Felixstowe & Walton
Redbridge hosted league leaders Felixstowe & Walton in what proved to be an intriguing encounter, with the away side looking to bounce back from a surprising 7-2 defeat to Waltham Abbey the previous week. Despite a lengthy injury delay, the match saw a dramatic finish, with Felixstowe claiming all three points to maintain their position at the top of the table.
The match began with early promise from the home side. Malachi Napa and Kaya Hansson-Ramis Hayrettin worked well together to create the first chance of the game, combining before Jack Chawner's curling effort flew wide of the target.
Felixstowe responded with a chance of their own, as Jacob Lay cut inside from the left, weaving past Redbridge's Josh Taylor, before firing a shot at goal. Samuel Nwabuko was alert in goal for Redbridge, gathering the effort comfortably at his near post.
Redbridge then had a good spell of play, Napa, in particular, was a lively presence, making space for himself before firing a shot wide. Ayodeji Olukoga also tested Felixstowe keeper Harry Wright, forcing a solid save from the visiting goalkeeper.
The match was then halted for a significant period (around 20-25 minutes) when Redbridge defender Henry Day suffered an injury. He fell awkwardly into a challenge and, after receiving treatment on the pitch, was stretchered off and taken to the hospital. The delay undoubtedly affected the flow of the match, as both teams struggled to regain their rhythm once play resumed.
As the half drew to a close, Felixstowe had the lion's share of possession, though they failed to create any meaningful chances. Redbridge, despite some early promise, couldn't trouble the away side’s back line, and the half ended in a somewhat subdued fashion.
There was one moment of note for Redbridge, as Nwabuko had to be alert to make a good stop after an Ethan Garcia deflected shot looked to be heading for the top corner.
Felixstowe came out for the second half with renewed intensity, and their attacking threat grew as the match wore on. Napa showed good individual skill early on to escape his marker, but with several players around him, he opted to go it alone. His shot was always rising and flew harmlessly over the bar.
Soumen Nandi broke forward for Redbridge and picked out the overlapping Chawner, whose cross was dropped by Wright, but unfortunately, there was no Redbridge player on hand to take advantage of the mistake.
Felixstowe then launched a sustained period of pressure, and the home side had to defend bravely. The away team saw two efforts blocked by Redbridge defenders in quick succession, both crucial moments that kept the score level.
The breakthrough came for Redbridge from their first corner of the match. Olukoga was in the right place at the right time, bundling the ball over the line from close range at the far post to give the home side a 1-0 lead. It was a scrappy goal, but Redbridge and their supporters would have felt it was deserved given their efforts.
However, the lead was short-lived. Just minutes later, Felixstowe equalized through Josh Hitter. The midfielder drove a powerful strike from distance, beating Nwabuko at his near post. The goal visibly lifted Felixstowe, and they started to assert more control over the match.
Hugh Cullum had a chance to put Felixstowe ahead shortly after, but his diving header was superbly turned away by Nwabuko.
As the game approached its final stages, Felixstowe’s substitute, Jose Santa De La Paz, became the hero. His pace saw him get ahead of his marker, and despite still having much to do, he unleashed a powerful shot that flew into the net to give Felixstowe a 2-1 lead with just minutes remaining.
The away fans erupted in celebration as their side held firm for the final minutes, successfully seeing out the match to secure a hard-fought victory.
