Motormen into Play-Offs

Adam Silver21 Feb - 17:20

Redbridge won 4-2 to move up into the play offs, goals from Chawner, Olukoga, Kayembe and Brown Bampoe.

Fresh from a midweek Velocity Cup quarter-final triumph, the Motormen returned to league action hosting a rejuvenated Lowestoft Town side.

The visitors, under new management, had recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season to climb out of the relegation zone — and they started brightly

Lowestoft applied early pressure, with Aaron Bullent forcing a strong save from Samuel Nwabuko after unleashing a powerful effort from distance

The breakthrough came when space opened up down the left. A deep cross found Bullent unmarked at the far post, and the forward made no mistake, poking home to give the visitors the lead.

Redbridge thought they had responded swiftly. Ayodeji Olukoga delivered from the flank and Sam Carter volleyed home, but celebrations were cut short as the assistant’s flag went up — the ball had already drifted out of play.

The Motormen began to dominate, with much of their play coming down the right wing. However, several dangerous crosses were gathered comfortably by the visiting keeper.

The equaliser arrived when Pedro Carvalho squared intelligently into the path of Chawner, who calmly guided his finish into the bottom corner.

Redbridge completed the turnaround just nine minutes later. Carvalho floated a teasing cross from the left, and Olukoga rose at the far post to volley home emphatically.

Williams’ persistence earned a corner as Redbridge pushed for more, while Karl saw a goal bound effort bravely blocked as the hosts took a deserved lead into the interval.

The Motormen made a flying start after the restart. Carvalho won possession on the left and slipped the ball into Brown Bampoe. His initial cross was blocked, but at the second attempt the ball was turned home by Kayembe via a deflection.

Lowestoft nearly pulled one back moments later — a fierce strike beat Nwabuko but rebounded off the post in a major let-off for the hosts.

Redbridge were now in full control. Olukoga saw a shot palmed away, with Carvalho inches from converting at the far post. Williams delivered a teasing cross that Kayembe headed just over, while a well-worked corner routine ended with Chawner’s curling effort dropping narrowly over the bar.

Carvalho himself tried his luck from distance, first with a curling strike that was easily gathered, and later attempting an audacious lob that forced the keeper to scramble back and tip over.

The fourth goal felt inevitable.

Substitute Brown Bampoe capped an excellent cameo, firing beyond Binnie to all but secure the points.

Lowestoft rarely threatened, though Bullent headed wide and later flashed another effort off target. Substitute Prince blazed over when well placed.

The visitors rallied late on, striking the bar before being awarded a stoppage-time penalty following a challenge in the box — a final twist in an entertaining contest.
