CITY SLICKERS! Motormen Sunk at Home

CITY SLICKERS! Motormen Sunk at Home

Adam Silver

Redbidge fell to their first home defeat of the campaign losing 3-1 to Cambridge City.

The Motormen entertained Cambridge City in the second meeting between the two sides this season, following their previous encounter in the FA Trophy, when City progressed via a penalty shoot-out.

Cambridge made the perfect start and took the lead inside the opening minute. Fletcher Toll saw his effort take a huge deflection, wrong-footing Lewis Greene and sending the ball into the net as the sizeable travelling support celebrated.

Redbridge looked to respond, with Karl Kayembe showing good pace to get beyond his defender before firing narrowly wide.

However, City doubled their advantage soon afterwards. Toll was at the heart of the action again, this time producing a superbly struck effort that dipped over the backtracking Greene and into the net to make it 2–0.

The visitors continued to look dangerous going forward, with Freddie Hockey shooting just over before Ayodeji Olukoga delivered a teasing cross from the right which was turned behind for a corner.

Charlie Royle then found space inside the Redbridge defence, but his effort was comfortably held by Greene.

Redbridge pulled one back with a spectacular finish. The ball was laid into the path of Jack Chawner, who looked up and spotted James Philp off his line. From a considerable distance, Chawner produced a spectacular effort which flew over the stranded goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Cambridge were awarded a free-kick just outside the Redbridge penalty area soon afterwards. The effort was blocked by the wall, with the follow-up deflecting wide for a corner.

City almost restored their two-goal advantage when another attack down the left produced a superb cross for Toll. He connected with the delivery, but Greene made himself big and produced an excellent save to keep Redbridge within touching distance.

The visitors did eventually find a third. Following a long throw, Hockey reacted quickest from close range to finish and put Cambridge back in control.

City almost added a fourth before the interval as they passed their way through the Redbridge defence, but Toll was perhaps too casual with the finish, allowing Greene to make the save.

Redbridge made an early change after the restart, with Philip Brown Bampoe replacing Asamoah as the hosts looked for a way back into the
contest.

Cambridge continued to threaten from set pieces and wide areas. A deep cross found Toll, who rose above two defenders to plant a header just wide of the upright.

Redbridge came close to reducing the deficit when Kayembe flicked the ball towards goal, only for a defender to recover in time and clear the danger.

A mix-up at the back then presented Cambridge's number 20 with an opportunity, but his effort failed to trouble Greene.

At the other end, Louie Remi brought the ball under control and drove towards goal. With the goalkeeper coming out to narrow the angle, Remi's effort drifted narrowly wide of the upright.

Redbridge turned to the bench in search of a change in fortunes, but the second half proved a much quieter affair than the opening 45
minutes.

Cambridge City saw out the game to claim a 3–1 victory and move up to sixth in the table just a point now behind the Motormen.
