Spillane's Side Win Battle Of The Bridges

Spillane's Side Win Battle Of The Bridges

Adam Dennehey25 Sep 2011 - 18:07

Terry Spillane’s Redbridge moved up to ninth in the league after a fantastic performance saw them deservedly beat Heybridge Swfits 3-0, who until the game had been one of only two unbeaten sides left in the division.

The game got off to a lightning start and the home fans thought that Heybridge had scored within three minutes but Luke Callender’s header from a long throw-in; hit the side-netting instead of going in.

Down the other end, the Motormen were beginning to click into gears. A brilliant freekick by Ben Bradbury down the right wasn’t dealt with at all by the home defence and the winger’s delivery almost crept into Jason Willis’s far post.

On the right flank for Redbridge was Nathan Gordon. The striker has impressed in the position in the last couple of weeks and was beginning to influence the game. He brought down a terrific ball in midfield from Lewis Dark firing a shot over from 30 yards after running into a central area.

It was end to end stuff. A great run by Gordon down his flank put in a peach of a ball into the area but neither James Robinson nor Ryan Murray could quite get onto it and the ball fizzled out for a throw-in to the hosts on the far-side.

Despite Bertie Brayley going close with an audacious looking shot from 30 yards out, Redbridge’s defence was working hard with full-backs Aarun Best and Tommy Spillane impressing. They alike the rest of the defence don’t simply lump the ball clear and are good intelligent players on the ball too and have the ability to pass the ball and play positively something which is becoming a real ‘trademark’ of Spillane’s team this year.

Heybridge though were passing the ball about too and looked dangerous on the break. A nice ball in midfield from Michael Toner found Luke Callander inside the area. The striker held of the challenge of Glen Golby but Adam Rafis charging of his line made a brilliant save to deny Heybridge’s no.9 and keep the Motormen on level terms.

Rafis was in the thick of the action moments later. After making a comfortable save to deny Mark Wright (who for those interested in reality tv is a ‘star’ on The Only Way Is Essex) the keeper’s clearance was poor and Heybridge within seconds came close to scoring. A great ball from Toner found Brayley inside the area. He did well to skip past his marker before firing a powerful low cross across the box but no-one could get onto it and Redbridge breathed a sigh of relief.

On the break following good play by Best, Bradbury shot over a tough chance. The hosts were hanging on and somehow they got to half-time level thanks to Nathan Smith clearing a goal-bound shot from Murray. The rebound agonisingly fell the wrong way for the big forward’s strike-partner Robinson with the ball getting cleared annoyingly to safety.

After half-time Heybridge started the half better with Brayley firing over inside the area following good play by winger Ricky Griggs. The experienced forward’s effort didn’t worry Rafis in goal and with that effort gone, the Motormen urged on by their coaching staff moved forward and took control of the game.

Murray was beginning to look more and more of a threat up top for Redbridge. After winning virtually every header that came his way in the first half, he headed a chance over from a corner. The warning signs were there for Heybridge and they didn’t bother listening to them as on 59 minutes Redbridge took the lead.

A flowing team-move from the Motormen ended with Gordon striking a high cross into the area. Murray held of his marker to head the ball towards Bradbury on the edge of the box. Redbridge’s skilful no.7 sidestepped his marker before curling in a gorgeous strike into the top corner of the far post from the edge of the box. It was some finish by Bradbury and despite the hosts keeper Jason Willis getting a hand onto it, it was hit too sweetly to be stopped.

After Bradbury’s moment of magic, Redbridge began looking for a second goal. But for a fantastic save by Willis from a Murray header from a marvellous long ball into the area by Best, Heybridge would have been 2-0 down minutes after conceding.

Just over 10 minutes later Redbridge doubled their lead. Moments after Golby had sent in dangerous cross into the area, the captain sent in a long throw-in into the area. Murray again won the flick-on and under pressure from Nathan Gordon, Heybridge’s skipper could only diver the ball out to Trenkel who fired in a delicious shot back into the crowded area where it flew past Willis and into the bottom corner. It was the popular midfielder’s 4th goal for the club putting him level at the top of the scoring charts along with Bradbury.

Heybridge looked shattered and with their heads down, Redbridge pushed on and six minutes later made it 3-0. Robinson (grandson of Spurs and England legend Jimmy Greaves) created the goal with a brilliant run down the left and after beating three opponents sent in a brilliant low ball into the area which Murray finished off with aplomb. It was the big striker’s third of the season.

To the delight of Spillane and his coaching staff, the boys saw out the remaining time available to claim their second 3-0 win in a row, following on from the side’s terrific performance a week before away to Wingate & Finchley. They have two massive games coming this week at the Oakside against league leaders Grays and Bury Town in the FA Cup and should prove a tough test for both of those teams.

Redbridge: Adam Rafis, Ryan Oliva (Jonathan Wheatstone 71), Tommy Spillane, Aarun Best, Glen Golby, Dan Trenkel, Ben Bradbury, Lewis Dark, Ryan Murray, James Robinson (Joe Gardner 88), Nathan Gordon.
