Redbridge End The Year On A High

Redbridge End The Year On A High

Adam Dennehey31 Dec 2011 - 19:20

Terry Spillane’s Redbridge rounded of the year on a high by winning their second home league game of the season after defeating Paul Martin's Romford.

It was the club’s third home league win of 2011 and a fine way for the Motormen to see out what has been a marvellous year for the club which has seen the side play some great attacki

Just as they did against Waltham Forest on Boxing Day, Redbridge went ahead on 7 minutes getting control of the game effectively from the off.
A foul 25 yards out gave Ryan Wade a good opportunity to score from. The forward struck the ball nicely going in off the post although it may have looked as if the ball deflected in off of Matt Turpin. Either way Redbridge were ahead.

Romford then came back into it and with Paul Clayton and Jamal Heywood
began to keep the ball in midfield. However the visitors were lucky not to go down to 10 men when David Ottley dragged down Joe Gardner just outside the area with the defender being the last man. Referee Keith Yeo though only booked the defender much to the annoyance of Spillane and his coaching staff.

Redbridge were looking strong and should have scored a second before half-time but Turpin was unlucky to see a header from a Billy Sendall long-throw go narrowly over the bar with Nathan Gordon going close with an effort after good play from Michael Toner and Wade.

Ellis Skidmore was working hard up front for Romford but the youngster on loan from Concord Rangers was getting no luck. The forward who scored 6 goals in 9 appearances for Redbridge last season saw a shot inside the crowded area deflected wide before seeing a Paul Kavanagh free-kick deflected agonisingly wide of his path inside the six-yard box.

Redbridge improved in the second-half with their wide players Gordon and Ben Bradbury coming more into the game. Bradbury forced Johnson into a save with Gordon being a constant threat down the right beating his marker time and time again.

Joe Gardner was working hard up top alongside Wade and he doubled Redbridge’s lead with his sixth goal of the season. Good play in midfield enabled Gardner to pick up the ball 40 yards from goal, he swept the ball out wide to Bradbury whose first-time cross beautifully found the forward to guide home into the bottom corner.

Gardner was in the thick of the action and on 74 minutes he wrapped the game up for Spillane’s side coolly lofting the ball into the top corner after controlling Toner’s ball from the right. It was the striker’s seventh of the season and he surely must be amongst quite a few Motormen who must be targeting 10-15 goals overall come May.

Joe Wright in goal was having a steady game and made a fine stop late on
from a free-kick as he claimed his first clean sheet for the club. The game ended somewhat on a sour note as Mitchell Das unluckily picked up a booking after being involved in a scrap with Romford’s keeper Johnson which was a rather unnecessary way to end the game.

The year 2011 will go down as a memorable one for everyone concerned with the Motormen and certainly involved with the club from the committee to the management to the fans are hopeful that 2012 will see the club continue to move in the right direction on and off the pitch.

Redbridge: Joe Wright, Billy Sendall, Jamie Haywood, Matt Turpin, Glen Golby, Daniel Hopkins, Ben Bradbury (Mitchell Das 81), Michael Toner, Joe Gardner, Ryan Wade (Shane Wyllie 75), Nathan Gordon.
