Ellul And Das Goals Defeat Soham

Adam Dennehey26 Feb 2012 - 11:53

Redbridge edged an exciting five-goal thriller against Soham Town Rangers at the Oakside to remain fully in the play-off chasing spots.

Terry Spillane’s side started brightly and perseverance by Shane Wyllie put Soham’s keeper Daniel Bircham under pressure late on with the striker’s flick towards goal unfortunately being deflected back onto him and behind after coming of the keeper.

It was all Redbridge in the opening stages and after Joseph Ellul headed a Vinnie Durrant corner over on four minutes, a minute later the hosts took the lead when Mitchell Das intelligently flicked in a shot over Bircham after being picked out by Wyllie.

It was the youngster’s third goal of the season and judging on his recent form, he is looking to make up on lost time and go on a run now that he is getting a run in the team after having to make do with cameos off the bench for the most part of the year.

Shortly after going ahead, Redbridge were unlucky not to double their lead but Vinnie Durrant saw a rasping free-kick well held by Bircham before Wyllie blazed over a difficult chance inside the area following good work by Aarun Best and Das.

Against the run of play on 15 minutes, Soham equalised. After Durrant gave away a foul, the resulting free-kick found Michael Simpson at the back post. His header was brilliantly saved by Joe Wright but fell straight to Andrew Coleman who tucked the ball home.

It was a sloppy goal for the Motormen to concede, but this team has never been one for stepping back from a challenge and eight minutes later they were back in the lead when Joe Ellul back-headed in Billy Sendall’s long-throw from the left.

The goal was Redbridge’s 10th (yes you’ve read that right) from a throw-in this season and the sixth that Sendall has assisted. They may not be pretty but they have been used well by Redbridge this season and a lot of teams have been troubled by them.

Incredibly Soham could have equalised for a second time on their next attack but thankfully David Cobb shot narrowly wide after Best was unable to clear a long ball with the ball creeping inches wide of Wright’s left-post.

Redbridge held on to take a lead into half-time but came close to getting a third before the break with Michael Toner, Glen Golby and Das seeing efforts blocked as Soham defended well in numbers to give themselves hope after the break.

In the second-half Redbridge let their foot of the gas slightly but were still able to maintain control on the game. Joe Gardner was brought on for Best who was forced off after a good shift due to precautionary back injury.

Gardner was lively and had Redbridge’s effort of the half, seeing a shot blocked after good work by Toner and Lewis Dark in midfield. On 73 minutes the game was seemingly wrapped up when Ellul headed home at the back-post from a Durrant corner, for his second of the match.

Soham though to their credit kept going and after Dubi Obgonna saw a goal ruled out for a border-line offside decision, the forward got his goal two minutes from time, heading home a corner as Redbridge were forced to defend late-on to secure the victory.

Redbridge: Joe Wright, William Sendall, Aarun Best (Joe Gardner 58), Joseph Ellul, Glen Golby, Michael Toner, Perry Burns (James Robinson 75), Lewis Dark, Shane Wyllie (Ryan Wade 78), Mitchell Das, Vincent Durrant.
