Redbridge came out of the blocks fast and after a bright start went ahead on six minutes when James Robinson diverted home a Joe Gardner’s cross from the right. The ball appeared to get a deflection before going in but it was defiantly Robinson’s goal.
Forest simply couldn’t respond to Redbridge’s bright start and with Lewis Dark in particular controlling the ball well in midfield, a second goal early-on always looked on the cards. That came on 19 minutes when Joe Gardner stabbed home Joe Ellul’s header from a Mitchell Das corner.
Shortly after Forest were awarded a penalty when Moise Djiomo-Nyah was adjudged to have been brought down by Aarun Best. It looked a harsh decision by the officials but justice perhaps was done when Inaki Ordono blasting the penalty wide of Joe Wright’s left-hand post.
Best was in the thick of the action moments later, a charging run from the right-back found Das out wide down the flank and the forward drove onto the edge of the area only to see his great low strike cannon back of the post and away to safety.
Shortly after from a Das corner the ball struck a Waltham Forest defender’s hand and a penalty was rightly given. After Michael Toner’s spot-kick miss against Great Wakering, Das stepped up to fire home past Aaron Omand for his sixth goal of the season.
Strangely Redbridge slipped back after that and Forest grabbed a goal before the break. After doing well to deal with five corners, the Motormen couldn’t deal with a sixth in a row as Nicolas Bondou’s header looped into the far corner past Wright.
It was a bad way to the end the half. However the Motormen’s start to the second-half was sensational, which would no doubt have pleased Terry Spillane who has in the past called for his side to be more ruthless in front of goal.
A minute after the restart Redbridge made it 4-1 when good work again from Dark in the middle allowed Gardner freedom down the right. He fed the ball to Perry Burns and with Forest’s players all standing stationary waiting for an offside call, the winger picked out Gardner in the box to tap home for his second.
Down the other end Forest went close to making it 4-2 when Dominic Okanu struck the woodwork with the rebound being hacked away to safety by Glen Golby. It was a moment of luck which went the Motormen’s way and on 53 minutes they made it 5-1.
This goal was self-inflicted from Forest as a poor pass by centre-back Matt Waldron found Perry Burns who picked out Robinson to play in Gardner to slot past Omand for his first career hat-trick. It was the forward’s 15th goal of the season!
Some slack defending allowed Forest a second on 67 minutes. Matt Turpin dollied about on the side-line conceding possession, allowing a cross to come into the area which Okanu to his credit did well to knock in past Wright.
Conceding a second seemed to wind up Redbridge and in a sign of ruthlessness four minutes later they scored a sixth. A great team move ended with Best sending in a brilliant cross for Robinson to powerfully head home for his second of the game.
Substitutions were made by both sides to freshen up things and Eddie Hart recently signed from Stansted, who had impressed in two recent friendlies scored his first goal for the club tucking home a shot under Omand after more good work by Robinson.
All in all it was a good day’s work for Redbridge and with some results going in their way, a push for the final play-off spot continues for at least another week. It’s been some season so far so let’s continue to believe in the squad.
