Redbridge went into the match in good recent form unbeaten in their previous four matches and knowing they would need to continue in the same vain to give themselves any chances of reaching the play off positions. Top scorer Joe Gardner was suspended and he could only watch on from the stands.
It was Heybridge however who got the perfect start after just 4 minutes when Luke Callender broke free down the right win and his cross to the far post found the unmarked Solomon Ofori who connected superbly to volley past Joe Wright leaving him with no chance.
Redbridge were shocked by this early set back and picked themselves up straight away as they went on the attack looking for an instant reply. Just 9 minutes later they were given the chance when Daniel Hopkins ball out wide found Mitchell Das who cut the ball back inside his defender Conner Cramner and in doing so saw the defender handle to concede a penalty. At first the referee failed to notice any wrong doing but his assistant on the near side was waving his flag and the referee then changed his mind and pointed to the spot.It was the third consecutive match where we had been awarded a penalty and Das cooly stepped up to score his 2nd spot kick of the week and get Redbridge back on level terms.
The goal gave the home side confidence and they were now well on top with Michel Toner in particular looking impressive against his former club. He went on a mazy run beating two defenders before his cross went across the goalmouth eluding his colleagues in a red shirt. Redbridge were then guilty of almost allowing their opponents back into the match, first Joseph Ellul failed to control the ball allowing Ofori in clear on goal with just Joe Wright to beat but the keeper stood tall and made a good save before the home defence cleared the danger. Moments later and with the Redbridge defenders passing the ball around needlessly in their own box a loose pass fell to Tom Broadhurst and his lob beat Wright but went just wide of the post. The away side were finishing the half the stronger and should of regained the lead when substitute Jamie Moore let fly from 20 yards but saw his shot rebound back off the crossbar.
The 2nd half started at a slower pace than the 1st but it was Redbridge who had the first chance when a Toner free kick found Glen Golby who connected but saw his effort roll towards the post and come back out into the welcoming arms of goalkeeper Ashley Harrison. Moments later and Redbridge substitute Ryan Murray was maybe lucky not to receive his marching orders after he lost possession and in trying to win the ball back went in far too late with his tackle on James Stevens. The referee produced a yellow card which was in his mind may of been a way of evenings things up as Heybridge’s Jake Brown should of seen red in the 1st half for raising his arms to Redbridge defender Matt Turpin.
As the match neared it’s end it seemed that Redbridge would have to settle for a point but with just two minutes remaining Das found Murray in space and he drilled his effort into the back of the net sparking joyous scenes all round. There was still time however for another goal and Murray returned the compliment this time by crossing to the far post where an unmarked Das dived to head home and give Redbridge a massive 3 points.
With just two matches remaining Redbridge would need to take maximum points and hope that sides above them drop points but it will certainly make for a tense end to the season.
