It was a tremendous way for Redbridge - bossed by Jody Brown due to the absence of manager Terry Spillane with illness to claim – to end their journey on the road this season at a ground where in the past the club have had a wretched record.
Both sides came out of the blocks well. Brentwood saw captain Darren Blewitt head an early corner wide before the pacey Ryan Edgar forced Joe Wright into a comfortable save on 5 minutes.
On their first break, Redbridge won a hotly disputed free-kick when Blewitt fouled Robinson in a shoulder-to-shoulder challenge just outside the box. Joe Bricknell coolly stepped up to find Elliot Justham’s right-hand corner and score his first goal for the club.
His father Dave Bricknell who was Spillane’s assistant manager earlier in the season was no doubt impressed by his son’s goal watching on from the stands. The youngster has made an impact since re-joining and looks a great prospect indeed.
Brentwood’s skipper Blewitt was in the thick of the action and moments later went down under a hefty challenge from Ryan Murray that more than lived up to the popular forward’s nickname which is Rhino! Despite both players going for the ball, referee Chris Evans decided to book Murray which seemed somewhat harsh.
Aarun Best was impressing at right-back and after a dazzling team move involving James Robinson, Michael Toner, Lewis Dark and Murray the forward sent a ball across goal aimed for Mitchell Das. Only the intervention of Justham stopped the forward from tapping the ball home.
Das was impressing on the right linking up with Robinson and Murray well and the forward saw a shot blocked in the area after good work from Bricknell before blazing a shot wide of Justham’s right-hand post seconds before the break.
Brown decided to make a substation at half-time with Jamie Haywood coming on for Best. Within the opening minute Redbridge pressed for a second with Das forcing Justham into a comfortable save with a shot from 20 yards.
Robinson was looking dangerous and after good work again from Bricknell and Das saw a shot on the turn blocked inside the box as he continued in his search for his 10th goal of an injury-hit season.
On the hour-mark Brentwood should have been reduced to 10 men when Blewitt lunged into a challenge on Haywood on the byline but Evans only decided to book the defender who went into the challenge with his studs-up.
Toner was roaring forward from left-back at every opportunity and saw a powerful shot from 25 yards blocked bravely by Brentwood’s Mbilive Lokando before sending in a cross straight into Justham’s gloves.
Brentwood then came back into the game and Edgar saw a shot from long-range deflected wide for a corner before Danny Ailey somehow saw an effort from five yards deflected wide for a corner.
Shane Wyllie came on for the booked Murray and impressed once again with his work-rate. He boxed Brentwood’s defenders into corners and but for a poor pass by Das would have surely doubled the Motormen’s lead with 10 minutes to go.
Redbridge’s defence was holding firm. Golby who had been exceptional at the back collided nastily with Brentwood’s substitute Robbie Rees. In a moment fitting of a movie, Golby just like the true leader he is, was patched up with a headband and carried on playing shortly after like he had never been injured.
It was the inspiration his team-mates needed to see the game out and grab the three points. But for a fantastic double save from Justham - who had an excellent season with the Motormen last year – who denied Bricknell and Robinson deep into injury-time Redbridge would have doubled their lead.
Despite other results going against the club in their hunt to secure a play-off spot it had been a fine afternoon in Essex. Redbridge have secured sixth place in the league and deserve tremendous praise and credit in doing so.
Redbridge: Joe Wright, Aarun Best (Jamie Haywood 46), Michael Toner, Matt Turpin, Glen Golby, Daniel Hopkins, Joe Bricknell, Lewis Dark, Ryan Murray (Shane Wyllie 74), James Robinson, Mitchell Das (Eddie Hart 85).
