In truth Redbridge never turned up and in between some good play from the visitors blew chances to get on the score-sheet at crucial times in both halves, as Chatham were ruthless and made the hosts pay for poor finishing.
The unpredictable Shane Wyllie was starting up front for the Motormen alongside Eddie Hart. Wyllie powered a shot over from just inside the area early on before Hart saw a belter of a shot from the edge of the box tipped wide by Tim Roberts,
In the absence of Joe Wright, Alex Jennings was making his debut for Redbridge in goal and the youngster who has been waiting patiently for his chance to play, made a good save to deny Lloyd Blackman’s low effort inside the area
Sadly for Jennings moments later he was beaten as Matt Turpin tripped Gary Tilley inside the area to concede a penalty. Lee Hales calmly tucked away the spot-kick sending Jennings the wrong way in the process.
Chatham were now bossing the game and Hales was only denied a second by a smart save by Jennings with Wyllie down the other end missing another chance as he skied over a Jamie Haywood cross on the half-hour.
Five minutes before half-time Tilley coolly finished in the area after good work by Hales to double Chatham’s lead before their keeper Roberts produced an outstanding and breath-taking double save to deny Redbridge a goal.
Somehow the keeper stopped Joe Gardner’s powerful volley from a cross from the left with his gloves before catching Hart’s header from a yard out on the rebound. It was a save so good it had to be seen to be believed.
After the break for once in what has been an exciting thrill-a-minute-season, Redbridge failed to even muster a challenge to attempt another great comeback. The ball just didn’t break their way.
Shortly after Wyllie blazed a shot over, substitute Mitchell Das on for the injured Ashley Wackers-Kyriako was denied a tap-in from a Michael Toner cross as the ball was cleared just before the ball would reach him at the near post.
Fellow substitute Joe Bricknell saw a header saved before Chatham wrapped the game up with goals three and four on 77 and 80 minutes scored respectively through a wonderful lob from Joe Fuller and an equally special free-kick scored by Lloyd Blackman. Jennings on both goal standing no chance.
Redbridge’s season might well have ended on a squib but the club’s fans and players are able to look back on some fantastic memories over the summer before it all kicks of again next season. Long live the 2011/12 season.
