Record Breaking Redbridge

Record Breaking Redbridge

Adam Silver28 Apr 2019 - 17:13

Redbridge ended the 2018/19 campaign with a new club record victory as they put TEN past a sorry St. Margaretsbury side.

The final day of the season saw it be a record breaking one for the Motormen as they recorded their highest ever club victory over a sorry St Margaretsbury side winning by Ten goals to nil.

It was always going to be a tough afternoon for the home side after the majority of their side was disassembled back in Mid March when the then management team and majority of the team moved to Bostik South Central side Hertford Town leaving a mixture of reserve and youth players to make up the side for their remaining league matches.

Redbridge themselves had several first team players missing however were boosted by the welcome return of Taylor Tombides to the side and he was instrumental in the victory.

It was actually the home side who had the first chance of the game when Luke Provenzano took advantage of a defensive error only to be thwarted by Harvey Wright in the Redbridge goal who stood firm and made the save.

The deadlock was broken after just five minutes when Daniel McCullock showed good pace down the right flank crossing into the middle finding Tombides all alone at the far post and the striker made no mistake as he fired home the opening goal.

Conor Okus then played a lovely weighted pass looking for the run of Dan Gilchrist but the ball just ran away from him allowing Aiden Read in the St Margaretsbury goal to collect.

It was shortly 2-0 when Gilchrist played in Tombides and he danced past the out coming Read and stroked the ball into an empty net.

A rare corner for the home side had Wright clawing the ball away before Redbridge attacked yet again as McCullock saw his shot charged down before Walid Chaib fired the rebound over. Tombides should have then grabbed his hat trick but could only fire over after a Okus header was knocked down from a free-kick.

Redbridge were looking very dangerous going forward through the partnership of Tombides and Gilchrist as they threatened to score on every attack but missed further chances.

The third goal did arrive when Marcus Carter playing in a more forward role found himself in space and his shot was off target it hit against a St Margaretsbury defender wrong footing the goalkeeper and nestling into the back of the net, the defender certainly claimed what was his first goal for the club in what was his 74th appearance.

Carter was involved in the fourth goal as his shot was saved by Read however he could only push the ball into the path of Tombides who smashed home the follow up to grab his hat trick.

The home side were desperate for half time but conceded once again as McCullock was gifted far too much room to get his cross in finding an unmarked Okus who had the simple task of scoring from close range.

St Margaretsbury came out for the second half just looking to stem the tide and almost got a consolation goal when substitute Prince Eriamigtoo did well to put over a cross finding Jayden Mitchell-Brown who connected with his head but failed to find the target.

Gilchrist not having scored himself then changed that by picking up the ball before running towards goal leaving several players behind and allowed to waltz into the box unchallenged before calmly shooting home to make it SIX.

Wright in the Redbridge goal then almost gifted the home side a goal when he tried to overplay the ball out of his area before losing possession but the home side failed to capitalise and wasted the chance.

McCullock whom was involved in much of the Redbridge play showed good work crossing into Gilchrist who was given time to take a touch before cutting inside a defender and firing home for SEVEN.

Four minutes later and Gilchrist grabbed his hat trick in just 21 second half minutes as again he was given far too much time and space as he brought the ball under control before shooting past Read leaving him stranded.

Tombides who was having a quieter second half then curled an effort over before Gilchrist stepped up with his fourth of the afternoon.

A rare outing into the Redbridge half from the home side came to nothing as the shot went tamely whilst Redbridge continued to press looking for double figures and almost getting it as Chaib’s header from sub Charleston Browne’s cross was tipped around the post.

With four minutes remaining the magical 10th goal did eventually arrive and it was that man Gilchrist again slotting home a cross to complete the scoring and with it a perfect way to end the season.

The home side although having an afternoon they will want to surely forget ended their debut ESL season in a very respectable 7th place whilst Micky Wetherall’s Redbridge side finished 12th and will look to build for next season.
