Robinson Shines In Victory At Cheshunt

Adam Dennehey20 Nov 2011 - 15:56

Redbridge earned their first win in the league since the 4th of October thanks to a professional performance at Cheshunt which saw them go into their big FA Cup First Round Replay at Oxford City in good spirits.

Going into the game, it was a match that in terms of the club’s league position alone Redbridge had to win. After 10 minutes the hosts broke down their left with Anthony McDonald setting up Kevin Ashwood to have a shot on goal which was well saved by Adam Rafis down at his near post.

Redbridge were unlucky not go ahead after 12 minutes but Ryan Wade’s cross-shot after a good run from left-back by Vinnie Durrant agonisingly hit the inside of the post before being hacked away from goal by Cheshunt’s defence. Not long after that Ashwood’s strike partner Josh Hutchinson foolishly tried to acrobatically volley Sam Ruff’s cross into the back of the net when he would have been better advised to have taken the ball down before shooting.

James Robinson has certainly been getting alot of media attention as of late due to his grandfather being rather famous and he made sure he got more attention this week after bagging the Motormen’s opener. A good run and shot from the forward won a corner. Vinnie Durrant took the corner. After seeing the ball come back out to him outside the area, he beat his marker before drilling in a cross into the area. Chesunt’s keeper Joe Wright was forced into a save before Billy Sendall nicked the ball through to Robinson to slot home after 21 minutes.

Shortly after Ryan Wade was booked as a result of Cheshunt’s no.4 Nick Thurogood coming off worse after a 50/50 challenge. Cheshunt’s supporters were demanding a red-card for their former forward but the referee booked Wade instead. The skilful forward looked even more motivated than usual to prove a point in the game and worked his socks off the whole game.

Wade saw a free-kick saved by Wright before Robinson saw a chance go begging after he had broken clear with Cheshunt’s James Burgess doing just about enough in the box to win the ball and keep the hosts in the game.

After half-time, Redbridge came out immediately looking to wrap the game up. Not long into the half they doubled their lead. A great ball from midfield found Joe Gardner on the wing and the skillfull forward looked up and with Zinedine Zidane-like precision found Robinson alone in the box who simply rounded Wright before tucking the ball home for his second of the game and fourth of the season.

With the game in effect won, Redbridge just did what they needed to do to see the game out. Nathan Gordon, Shane Stamp and Stuart Hepburn all came on to offer Terry Spillane something different. Gordon impressed offering great balance down the right linking up well with the work-horse Wade who had now been pushed as the centre-forward up top.

Wade came close to getting the goal that he derserved but saw a shot blocked by Wright. In the last minute of the game, Cheshunt broke clear from a corner and McDonald chipped in a shot from about 20 yards over the backpeddling Rafis to give the home fans something to shout about.

Alas though, it was too late as moments later the full-time whistle sounded for a deserved Redbridge win. Eyes will be firmly on that FA Cup replay away to Oxford City on Tuesday night, where judging by the way the Motormen have been playing, a win away is fully achievable.

Redbridge: Adam Rafis, Billy Sendall, Vinnie Durrant, Matt Turpin, Glen Golby, Dan Trenkel (Stuart Hepburn 79), Joe Gardner (Nathan Gordon 58), Danny Hopkins, James Robinson (Shane Stamp 67), Ryan Wade, Jamie Haywood.
