Wyllie Bags Winner Against Cheshunt

Adam Dennehey7 Mar 2012 - 11:29

A second-half strike from Shane Wyllie was enough to secure Redbridge a win over struggling Cheshunt, keeping their play-off dreams still intact.

Cheshunt’s new manager Tony Faulkner was in attendance at the Oakside and he wouldn’t have been impressed at how Redbridge dominated the first half, particularly down the right-hand side through Joe Gardner’s trickery down the flanks.

An early cross from Gardner after three minutes just missed picking both Shane Wyllie and his strike partner Mitchell Das and was a sign to come for Cheshunt’s defence who certainly couldn’t afford a second to relax.

Redbridge’s first attempt came just after 10 minutes but Durrant leaning back struck over in a crowded area and the chance, all be it a half-chance was gone. Ten minutes later and the Motormen came agonisingly close to going ahead.

Good play by William Sendall, enabled Gardner to pick the ball up on the right. He fed in Wyllie running towards goal and the striker’s quick feet allowed to turn two his marker before sending a low drive inches wide of goal.

It was a stunning effort that in all honesty deserved to go in. Shortly after that Cheshunt had their only chance of the half when James Burgess headed over at the back post from a set-piece.

Just before half-time Durrant linked up with Das with the striker doing well to react to a loose ball 25 yards out, curling the ball narrowly wide of the top corner with Cheshunt’s keeper Glenn Willliamson well beaten.

With stern words from Terry Spillane in their ears no doubt, Redbridge came out after the break looking to score early and but for a bit of bad luck either Das or Matt Turpin would have slotted home a Gardner cross from the right.

That didn’t matter as Redbridge kept looking for that all-important goal. Good play from Durrant fed in Michael Toner at full-pelt into the box but unfortunately the midfielder’s delicate shot curled centimetres wide of the far post.

Soon after that Redbridge finally had the ball in the net when Durrant whipped in a cross from the left with Jamie Haywood scrambling the ball home. Sadly for the Motormen the officials ruled the goal out for offside.

Cheshunt were offering in little in attack and only looked like taking the lead on one occasion when Joe Wright’s clearance hit Josh Hutchinson with the relieved goalkeeper catching the ball easily on the edge of his box.

Redbridge were not moaning about Haywood’s offide goal and with 15 minutes remaining Gardner fed Wyllie into the area, who coolly slotted the ball home for his second of the season since joining in December.

With nothing to lose Cheshunt pushed forward for an equaliser but Redbridge’s defence marshalled brilliantly by Glen Golby and man-of-the-match Sendall (whose bravery defies logic!) held on with Wright only having to deal with one shot late on.

Redbridge: Joe Wright, William Sendall, Matt Turpin, Glen Golby, Jamie Haywood, Joe Gardner (James Robinson 68), Lewis Dark, Michael Toner, Vinnie Durrant, Shane Wyllie (Ryan Wade 80), Mitchell Das (Perry Burns 75).
