Burns On Fire In Hard-Fought Win Over Harlow

Burns On Fire In Hard-Fought Win Over Harlow

Adam Dennehey22 Feb 2012 - 09:17

After the disappointment of losing to Maldon & Tiptree at the weekend, Redbridge bounced back to form with a hard-fought but entertaining victory over Harlow Town that keeps their push for a play-off place going strong.

Harlow to their credit started the game well looking dangerous on the ball with Getro Kilapi and Tom Bruno looking sharp in the middle of the park. The visitors looked bright whilst Redbridge were looking to get a foothold on the game.

Unfairly perhaps on 19 minutes Harlow were awarded a penalty when Leon Lalite fell to ground in a crowded area between Matt Turpin and Glen Golby and despite few Harlow players appealing a penalty was awarded.

Joe Wright who has a good record of saving penalties could do nothing about Danny Brown’s powerful strike from the spot which flew hard and low into the bottom corner despite the keeper guessing the right way.

Any fears that Redbridge in going a goal behind wouldn’t have the will to fight back were quickly eradicated as with Shane Wyllie and Mitchell Das looking lively up, an equaliser for the Motormen looked likely of coming before half-time.

When it arrived, boy did it arrive in style. Three minutes after the half-hour, Perry Burns magically threaded a ball over Harlow’s centre-backs in the area for Lewis Dark to drive home past Bertrand Bossu in goal.

It was the midfielder’s fourth goal of the season and a great moment for Burns to celebrate given just how hard he has worked hard since the summer to get back to full-fitness after a horrific double-leg-break.

Burns was on fire and it wasn’t surprising six minutes later that another moment of class from the winger helped put Redbridge into the lead six minutes before the break, giving them a key psychological advantage going into half-time.

This time Burns weaved his magic with a run down the edge of the area and after exchanging passes with Lewis Dark clipped a ball back across the box for Vinnie Durrant to tuck home. It was the left-sided player’s fifth of the season.

It could have been 3-1 for Redbridge going into half-time however Bossu somehow kept out a powerful drive from Das from 25 yards out tipping the ball wide for a corner before saving a Golby header from close range.

In truth the second-half failed to live up to the first. Harlow to their credit pressed for an equaliser the whole half with Wright and his defence needing to be at their best from crosses to prevent the visitors from getting an equaliser.

Jeff Hammond who played for the Motormen in the 2007/08 season was looking bright for the visitors but failed to get a clear chance as Golby and Turpin blocked the experienced forward from getting a sight of goal.

Down the other end, Michael Toner and Das saw shots blocked as Terry Spillane’s side looked for a third to wrap the game up. Substitute James Robinson almost grabbed a third late on but headed a tough chance from a Wyllie cross over.

Amid the stupidity of a mini fire-work display set of by some of Harlow’s fans, the visitors sprung back into life late-on almost grabbing an equaliser when Bossu went up for a free-kick in injury-time with the ball narrowly missing his path at the far-post, thankfully going out for a goal-kick as the Motormen held on for three precious points.

Redbridge: Joe Wright, William Sendall, Aarun Best, Matt Turpin, Glen Golby, Michael Toner, Perry Burns (Joe Gardner 72), Lewis Dark, Shane Wyllie (Daniel Hopkins 90), Mitchell Das (James Robinson 88), Vincent Durrant.
