Local Derby Victory

Adam Silver8 Aug 2019 - 14:32

Redbridge traveled to local rivals Ilford and won 2-1 thanks to goals from Dean Hall and James Barlow making it two wins from our opening two games.

Redbridge looked for consecutive victories after their opening day win against St Margaretsbury as they made the very short trip down to Cricklefields.

An early mistake at the back by Redbridge was almost punished by the home side and although the chance was missed the offside flag was quickly raised.

Another defensive error led to another good chance for Ilford as Clifford Newby-Harris found himself bearing down on goal but he lacked composure and blasted well over.

Those missed chances proved costly when Redbridge took the lead after 15 minutes. A free kick was curled in by Liam Burgess finding Dean Hall who rose highest to place his header past the diving Hugo Rossetti.

The goal woke up the away side who almost got through on goal after strong play by Connor Okus then released Taylor Tombides but his first touch let him down and the chance had gone.

How Ilford never equalized next was a mystery to all within the ground as the ball was played across the area finding Elliott Brown all alone at the far post who just required the simplest of touches he proceeded to put all his weight behind the ball and lifted his shot over the bar.

The Motormen were certainly riding their luck however came up the other end and almost grabbed a second goal after good work by Richard Oxby saw him cut the ball back to Daniel Gilchrist whose initial shot was saved before Rossetti did well to claw the ball away in the melee which followed.

In an identical situation to their goal Rebridge almost scored again as this time Reece Latimer connected to a Burgess free kick but the cross bar denied him on this occasion.

Ilford then spurned a further opportunity before Valter Simao curled a free kick just over the bar.

The second period began with Ilford again having the lion share of possession and they were finally rewarded for their earlier misses drawing level within the first three minutes of the half.

A shot from Jerold Cobblah on the edge of the box surprised everyone as it flew past George Martin and nestled into the far corner of the net , it had certainly been coming.

The goal spurned the home side on and they appeared to pick up another gear as Redbridge found it hard to get the ball back however against the run of play they restored their lead,
Sam Dickens played a neat through ball into the path of James Barlow and he slotted past the out coming Rossetti.

Barlow then had further opportunities to make the game safe but at the same end as where Ilford had missed several guilt edge chances in the first half the curse now hit Redbridge as he blasted wide.

Ilford continued to press but lacked the urgency shown earlier as it was clear to see the goal had really thrown them, with no further chances from either side the Motormen held onto record their second win of the season and although early days they will be pleased to see themselves sitting second in the table.
