Friday Night to Forget for Motormen

Friday Night to Forget for Motormen

Adam Silver1 Feb 2020 - 16:02

Redbridge suffered a heavy defeat losing 7-2 at home to Clapton

Friday night football returned to the Oakside as Redbridge entertained in form Clapton and were looking for revenge after the 5-2 defeat earlier in the season.

The home side were required to do some early defending as Clapton were quickly out the blocks and looked to attack from the off.

Nana Boakye-Yiadom ran towards goal but was blocked off by Andy Edmund's the resulting free kick was taken by skipper Jaydon Charles and in true David Beckham style he curled the ball over the wall into the corner of the net superbly beating Florent Gislette in goal to give his side an early lead.

Just five minutes later and the away side doubled their advantage as hesitant defending by Redbridge allowed Boakye-Yiadom the freedom of the penalty area and he had time to pick his spot and make no mistake firing into the back of the net from close range.

From the kick off Redbridge had their first attack as James Barlow was through on goal before falling under the challenge of Klodlan Sulollari and although from my vantage point it was difficult to see what had happened there was shock from the bench as it was the Redbridge player who was shown a red card and sent from the field whilst the Clapton defender had to be replaced withdrawing through injury.

The home side's task was about to get even tougher now with just the ten man and so it proved as they struggled to get out of their own half with Clapton continuing to dominate proceedings.

Chris Londono then saw his effort well palmed away by Gislette for a corner which was swung in finding a Clapton player who failed to keep his shot going off target.

Redbridge were awarded a free kick which was put into the box by Liam Burgess looking for Hassan Nalbant who was pushed off the ball resulting in the referee pointing to the spot giving the home side a way back into the match.

It was not to be however as the referee was called over to the touch line by the assistant on the far side who was flagging for an offside and the decision was overturned.

Clapton came forward again and a dangerous ball was put into the area finding Daniel Emovon however he was put off by the presence of defender Dean hall and could only succeed in firing over.

The best chance of the half followed for for Redbridge as Burgess passed to Connor Okus who tried his luck from distance requiring Mohammed Ahmed to make his first save of the match as he pushed the ball out for a corner.

Within a minute Clapton had broken up field and scored again as a nice passing move ended with a Delmar Queni dancing around Gislette before tapping into the unguarded net.

The final chance of the half fell to Redbridge as Nalbant showed good skill inside the box but he blasted his effort across the goal and wide of the post.

The Motormen made a half time change with the returning Charlie Portway replacing Kurt Smith but it was the away side who scored yet again
when a Clapton free kick was floated in and although the initial effort was blocked on the line the resulting shot from Asher Modeste flew across the line to make it 0-4.

Clapton showed no sign of slowing down and could and should have scored a 5th as opportunities were spurned for both Charles and Queni as Redbridge continued to chase the game.

Dean Hall was then shown a yellow card for bringing down Modeste and up stepped Charles who managed to replicate his earlier effort with yet another sublime free kick leaving Gislette no chance.

The home side were now capitulating as within two minutes five became six as Clapton came forward and scored again with Boakye-Yiadom grabbing his second leaving the home bench and support shell shocked with what was taking place in-front of them.

From a home side throw in possession was given away allowing Queni through on goal before passing the ball into the back of the net for a seventh.

A rare attack from the home side as Joe Maskell saw his shot well blocked for a corner before they did get their consolation as Burgess floated in a free kick which was poked home by Nalbant.

They even had time to pull back a further goal when Nalbant this time turned provider crossing for Portway who finished well to give the score line a little more respectable although in truth it will certainly be a night to forget for Redbridge.
