Romford started brightly looking intent on bouncing back after losing 4-1 at home to Thamesmead in midweek. With young forwards Jeff Campbell and Tom Richardson up-top they looked a threat. The later hit the bar with a lovely chipped effort from the former’s pass which unluckily for the visitors fell just behind Kurt Smith with Redbridge hacking the ball away to safety.
Redbridge’s luck didn't hold out for long and on 22 minutes Romford took the lead. A decent-looking ball from Richardson was slightly misjudged by Lamar Lemonius on home-debut for the Motormen and Smith got in behind the defender to blast the ball into the net past Deal Neill from outside the box.
Any realistic chance Redbridge had of taking anything from the game went two minutes later when Richardson went down weakly inside the area following a tackle from Stephen Ikumelo. It looked a harsh decision but Richardson kept his cool from the spot to silence the home crowd to double the lead.
Amazingly straight from the kick-off Redbridge came close to reducing the arrears when Robbie Rees unleashed a stunning shot from the best part of 45 yards which Atu Ngoy in goal did well to save. It would have been probably been the best goal scored at the Oakside all year had the youngster’s effort gone in!
On 35 minutes Romford grabbed a third. After Sam Holloway was booked for a foul on Richardson 35 yards from goal, the resulting free-kick by Joe Oates was dropped by Neill with Richardson tucking the ball home inside the six-yard box.
It was harsh on Redbridge but that’s football for you. After the break Redbridge worked hard and looked determined to put in a better display with left-back Charlie Rolls and Cleaver impressing once again. Their best chance of a consolation came through Lemonious who saw a flicked-effort from a corner early into the half saved by Agou.
Steve Portway brought himself on late-on for 16-year old Shala Gabriel who had ran himself into the ground on his home debut. The manager made an impression winning some key headers as Romford’s fans enjoyed some banter with one of their former heroes.
Two close-range strikes from Tyler Christian-Laws in the dying stages of the game added further gloss to the score-line for the visitors. Redbridge will now have to get back on track and pick up points against Grays Atheltic and Ware next week to boost their survival chances.
Redbridge: Dean Neill, Danny Hayes, Charlie Rolls, Stephen Ikumelo, Lamar Lemonius, Sam Holloway, Shala Gabriel (Steve Portway 76), Antony McDonald, Jacob Cleaver, Pierre St Hilaire (Kyle Jervier 46), Robbie Rees.
