Motormen Almost Safe

A superb 4-0 win at Waltham Abbey including some great goals sees us just one point from safety. Our goals from Dobbs, Hayes, Asamoah and Theobald.

Redbridge got off to a dream start on Saturday taking a 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes, both from superb goals. After 4 minutes Jason Dobbs unleashed from 40 yards out that crashed into the top left hand corner leaving Jake Whincup helpless. Waltham Abbey responded by putting the ball into the Redbridge box from the re-start but Luke Reed cleared the danger. On 10 minutes Redbridge extended their lead. Dobbs was again involved picking out Danny Hayes who sped past his marker and slammed his shot past Whincup and into the roof of the net.

Cleaver moments later got amongst the Waltham Abbey defence and passed to Dan Holloway but Whincup pulled off a great save. At the other end Joe Pearman saw a shot from outside the box sail over the crossbar. That effort sprung the hamsters into life and Pearman and Coley both threatened but Lemonius and Reed stood firm in the centre of defence and Rolls was also working hard to keep the Abbey attack frustrated. Redbridge packed bodies into defence so when Abbey did carve out chances they often found their route to goal blocked. To compensate for this Abbey replaced a midfielder with Dean Green who entered the attack but was also unable to carve out any clear chances due to the Redbridge defensive wall. In the closing minutes of the half Coley managed to find himself getting past the tight defence but Dean Neil was on hand to dive bravely at the attacker’s feet to extinguish the threat.

10 minutes into the second half and Dobbs again got himself into a good position but his shot was turned by Sargant. But Waltham Abbey continued to press and when Green muscled his way into the Redbridge area it was down to Lemonius to pull off a great tackle prevent a shot on goal. On 63 minutes Abbey had the best chance of the match when Hayes headed away a cross which Joseph latched onto with a speculative shot which was only narrowly too high. A minute later Cleaver was fouled just outside the Abbey penalty area and sub Nana Asamoah stepped up and hit a dipping shot past the reach of Whincup to give Redbridge a three goal cushion.

There was still some defensive mopping up to be done and Neil had to turn away a Coley effort on 75 minutes and also had to punch away the resulting corner. Lemonius and Reed also had to combine to block and hook away a through ball which Green nearly capitalised on.

In the final minutes Cleaver looked to get his name on the score sheet after he got on the end of a through ball and placed the ball past Whincup but it narrowly missed the left post. But the fourth goal came on the next Redbridge foray when D’Sean Theobald passed several Abbey defenders and slotted the ball past Whincup to wrap up a comprehensive Redbridge victory.
