It was Redbridge that managed to grab the all important three points at Oakside stadium today as they beat AFC Sudbury 1-0.
This win means that the Motormen will remain in the Ryman League North and so it is Ilford who are relegated to the Essex Senior League. Although for Redbridge to get relegated they would have needed to lose and for Ilford to win and find a ten goal turn around to survive on goal difference.
Redbridge created loads of chances throughout the game but couldn’t convert them and it was hard to believe that there was only one goal. AFC Sudbury’s performance was good but just not good enough as they had the majority of the possession but didn’t create the chances that Redbridge did.
The match started quite slowly and it weren’t till the 10th minute where Redbridge got the first chance of the game, Jacob Cleaver had his first chance of many with a volley which went just wide. The first clear cut chance for either teams to get a goal went to Jacob Cleaver again as he was 1-on-1 with Sudbury’s keeper but he blasted the half-volley over. Chances were coming thick and thin for Redbridge but Sudbury continued to hold possession.
AFC Sudbury’s first chance of the game came from nothing their no.3 Robbie Martin had a shot from 25 yards which almost kept Redbridge’s keeper off guard but Dean Neil got down well and collected it after spilling the ball. Soon after Sudbury hit the crossbar with a cross that got caught by the wind and almost dropped in but the keeper managed to grab the ball after.
Sudbury started the second half stronger with some good spells of possession but couldn’t get a shot on goal. The deadlock was broken in the 66th minute and you could see it coming soon, Nana Asamoah scored the goal with a controlled finish after his great first touch inside of the defender.
After the goal the Redbridge seemed to sit back and try and hold Sudbury as they knew that they were safe. Sudbury had 2 chances to get a goal back, the first through Leon Antoine and the second by Luke Ingram but couldn’t convert these goal scoring chances.
The difference between the two sides was that although Redbridge weren’t playing their best football of the season, they were still creating chances but Sudbury didn’t create enough although they played some good controlled football in the middle of the park but none the less Redbridge survive and look forward to playing in this same league next season.
