Motormen win at Abbey

Adam Silver25 Sep 2013 - 11:25

Redbridge came away with an impressive 4-1 win at Waltham Abbey tonight , goals coming from Emiel Aiken(2) and Daniel Charge(2).

Redbridge travelled to in- form Waltham Abbey who had won their five previous league matches but put end to that run with a fine 4-1 victory.

The Motormen went into the match on the back of a good away performance at Harlow Town on Saturday where chances were missed which ended up seeing us lose a 2 goal lead and in turn dropping points. It therefore must have been mentioned tonight how important it was to take any chances that came our way and we did just that.

The home side started strongest with Ayrton Coley in particular causing problems down the right flank with his pace. With no real chances to speak of both sides cancelled each other out in the early stages but the game sprung into life after 18 minutes.

A ball was placed over the Waltham Abbey back line and Emiel Aiken raced clear with just ex Redbridge keeper Jake Whincup to beat. He casually lobbed the ball over him and watched as it dropped into the empty net to give the away side the lead. Minutes later and Ben Bradbury had a chance but his well executed volley went just wide of the post.

Redbridge started to get on top and their passing seemed to be that much quicker and smoother than the home side’s , they were using the flanks well and Aiken who was having his best game in a Redbridge shirt was looking dangerous in particular.

Into the 2nd period and the Motormen made the perfect start when Daniel Charge who was starting his first match back after being our injured got the 2nd goal. His shot was parried by Whincup and whilst the defence stood and admired the save the same player reacted quickest to stroke home the rebound.

The goal gave the home side the confidence to now go and find the equaliser and they had a good ten minute spell creating several chances the best of which fell to substitute Bradley Barnes but his shot lacked accuracy and drifted wide when he really should have tested the keeper.

After 73 minutes and Redbridge restored the two goal cushion when that man again Aiken was handed the ball fully 30 yards out from goal. He had a quick look up and saw Whincup slightly off his line and his powerful looping effort beat the keeper all ends up although many will feel he really should have done better.

With the game coming to an end Redbridge made all their subs in the final ten minutes and looked to see the match out but finally mad the game safe in the dying moments when Charge was allowed the freedom of the penalty box and he just waltzed past Whincup and tapped the ball into the empty net to secure a fine win and 3 points.
