Redbridge v Burnham Ramblers -MATCH ABANDONED

Adam Silver4 Dec 2013 - 20:17

Tuesday's match against Burnham Ramblers was abandoned deep into injury time with the score 2-2 after a serious injury to Burnham's Danny Cossington.

Redbridge went into the match looking for revenge against a side who had previously knocked them out the FA cup earlier in the season.

However after just 3 minutes on the clock the Motormen were behind to a strike straight off the training pitch. A corner taken by Ricky Evans fell to the unmarked Neil Richmond on the edge of the area and his first time low effort went through everyone beating Dave McCartney who by the time he saw it the ball was already past him. It was a disappointing goal to concede especially so early in the match.

The goal inspired the away side who were looking dangerous but Redbridge soon had their best chance when the ball fell to Patrick Damali who saw his long range effort just tipped over by Louis Godwin Green. From the resulting corner Tyron Thomas made connection but the ball was headed clear off the line by a defender.

The game started to become more open and Burnham were starting to become stretched as Redbridge made good use of the wings through wide men Abs Thompson and Ben Bradbury but it was the away side who had the next best chance when Mark Gorbell found himself with space to turn and shoot in the penalty box but McCartney was equal to it.

Redbridge soon thought they had taken the lead when Daniel Charge’s effort was fumbled by Godwin Green and Thompson knocked in the rebound but the lineman signalled for offside.

As the half came to an end only the woodwork saved Burnham as a great cross from Bradbury fell to Damali who was denied by a last ditch tackle before the ball was knocked back in firstly crashing down off the bar before Damali could only head the ball straight back onto the bar.

A great move from Burnham almost then saw them get a second but Richardson lacked composure at the last moment allowing the Redbridge defence to get back and clear the danger.

A half time sub saw new signing Kurt Smith replace Damali and he instantly looked to form a partnership with Charge but it was the away side that further extended their lead with a contentious offside decision. Bradley Nobbs cut inside his man and his effort rebounded to Richardson who looked offside but his effort was allowed to stand much to the annoyance of the Redbridge players and bench.

On 67 minutes Redbridge pulled a goal back when Liam Thomas headed home from a Bradbury corner which was his 2nd goal in as many matches.

The momentum was now fully with the home side and it was no surprise when on 77 minutes the equaliser finally came as Smith grabbed his debut goal with a real goal poachers effort.

With 3 minutes of injury time both sides had chances to win the game but it was with virtually the last kick of the game that Aaron Matthews came in very late on Burnham midfielder Danny Cossington leading to a serious of incidents resulting in 3 red cards being produced by the referee.

With the player unable to be moved awaiting an ambulance the referee was left with little option but to abandon the match and both sides now await a decision from the league to see if the match will need to be replayed.

The main thing however is that the player concerned was not more seriously injured and was later released from hospital after sustaining a dislocated knee cap. Everyone connected with Redbridge F.C. wishes the player well and hoping he has a speedy recovery.
