Cup Run Ends for Motormen

Cup Run Ends for Motormen

Adam Silver23 Mar 2016 - 09:12

Redbridge were knocked out the Essex Senior Cup as they lost 2-0 to Heybridge Swifts in the semi-finals

Heybridge faced Redbridge for the second time in four days as they hosted this Essex Senior Cup semi final.

The two sides had met on Saturday in the league where the Motormen had picked up a vital win and were hoping for more of the same in the cup knowing that Conference South side Concord Rangers awaited in the final.

The game took a while to get going and although was played at a fast pace most of the action took place in the middle of the park without either side being able to muster an attempt on target.

The home side were having most of the possession mainly down the left hand side using the pace of their winger Lamar Reynolds.

The only real chance of the half came for Heybridge when a loose ball was picked up by Lewis Godbold and his curling effort was tipped away by the diving save from Callum Chafer in the Redbridge goal.

An early chance in the second period should have seen Heybridge double their advantage but Raphael Duyile steered his header wide from six yards.

Redbridge had their first effort of the game soon after when Rigers Kabashi played in Reside Coxi-Sebastfao but his effort was wide of the target.

The home side eventually took the lead when a lovely cross from Reynolds found the run of substitute Declan Hunt and he glanced his header home.

In a final bid to try and rescue the tie Redbridge brought on all three subs at once but within minutes Heybridge went and increased their lead when a long range effort from Jack Barham deflected up and over Chafer into the back of the net.

Redbridge had their first and only real attempt on target in the last minute when Kabashi saw his pile driver turned away by Danny Sambridge.

The home side saw out the match and although not safe themselves in the league at least now have a cup final to look ahead to whilst Redbridge have to find four wins from their remaining six matches to survive.
